Why No BOS-SXM

Sat Jun 26, 2004 4:42 am

My family and I are going to Anguilla and the connections are very limited (BOS-SJU, BOS-St Thomas) and you have to connecxt on tiny ATR 42s with weird flight times. It would be a lot easier to fly BOS-SXM and hop on the ferry. One would think that the loads would be good enough, so why is there no flight?

Its only in recent years that AA and US have introduced nonstop service out of BOS to caribbean and mexican beach destinations. For years, AA simply owned the US-caribbean market and found it very easy and profitable to route all passengers via their MIA and SJU hubs and/or sometimes via their JFK gateway. With the downturn in business traffic, AA and other airlines have renewed their interest in serving beach/resort destinations, thus, we are seeing lots of new nonstop services to the islands, Cancun, and some cities on the mexican riviera.

As for BOS-SXM, there probably is a market for a weekend nonstop service with an A320 or 757 sized aircraft...give the airlines a bit of time, maybe in the coming years a flight will be introduced, until then, you will have to transit a hub city.

Icelandair flies BOS-SXM charters often during the winter. There isn't much demand for smaller Caribbean locations such as SXM in the summer months.
