KLM And Casablanca

Sat Jun 26, 2004 3:02 pm

Recently there have been threads about KLM pulling back routes, which has to do with the AF takeover. Here another one.

I was in Casablanca yesterday, and saw their grande airport office, and town advertising/office. It looks like KLM had a steady investment in CMN. But now they have quit all operations to CMN(from 1 June). I read in the Royal Air Maroc inflight magazine that RAM are stepping up their frequencies to NL, and presume this is at the least a good move, if not convenient.

My question is; is this really worth it? I know AF have strong ties with CMN, and that they have increased their frequencies, but is it worth completely pulling out KLM whilst NL also has a substantial Moroccan population? It doesn't really make sense to me. Anybody got some insights?

Well, you pretty much got it right I'd think.

They're trying to tie in with the traditions between countries, places that have a strong Dutch past KL keeps, and places that have a strong French past AF gets.

Morocco was a French colony, as you know, with the occasional Spaniard trying to take over.

I can't wait to see how this all plays out. Has AF discontinued any routes that KL has stepped up?

There was a post recently about KLM increasin their Philippines route...dont remember precisely.

But what i dont understand; now all those people travelling to Morocco have to go either with RAM (which is not that cheap) or they are routed through it me or doesnt that make sense? You only create relative higher capacity on those regional planes flying inbetween NL and France....

Another problem is any return trip over CDG has more then 100 euro (120 US$) on taxes added to it, because transferring passengers now have to pay departure tax for every flight sector. This means if AF advertizes for let's say a $240 fare between AMS and CNM you end up paying $ 350. So I guess many people would rather choose RAM, even if their price without tax is higher.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Yes I also Agree, However keep in mind that there are many Charter flights between NL and Morocco, Also from the Dutch regional airports like RTM and EIN.

KLM has flown for many years a flight to CMN operated by Transavia Airlines.
