PTV's On CO's 757's In The Mid 90's?

Sat Jun 26, 2004 11:17 pm

I remember back around 1996 flying on a CO 757 that had TV's in the back of each seat that you could play video games and a few other things with. My question is how long were they in place and has anyone else had experience with this system?

I had forgotten about that system.... It was also installed on a large number of 737s as well. It provided a fairly large amount of reading material (including gate info for connecting passengers) as will as the various games. Unfortunately, the company that installed, owned, and maintained the system went out of business shortly after it was up and running on most of the fleet.

CO did have a type of personal television IFE system on some aircraft that, as pointed out, provided gate information, video games, and other information, but I recall the system being installed in the CO 733s....I did not think that the 757 fleet had that type of system as they were delivered much later on. As pointed out above, the entertainment system was developed and marketed by a company that later went broke and out of business and no maintenance or spare parts were available, thus, the system was removed. I think that America West had a similiar system for the same supplier on some of its 737s, which is also now being removed as aircraft are refurbished....its now just extra weight.

CO also equipped some of its 733s with video monitors for movie presentations, back then, as the 733s did some longer-haul routes such as EWR-PHX and CLE-LAX (now 737NG territory), many of those aircraft now fly CLE-Florida routes and the system is sometimes used for Continental Vision inflight entertainment.

This system was also used on USAir's 737 for a brief period of time, I remember flying PHL-PHX around 1995 or so and found it to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, even though we had to pay to use it...too bad it didn't last long...
