Flying In Egypt - Egyptians & Foreigners Pay Same?

Mon Jun 28, 2004 8:03 pm

Do Egyptians pay the same fares as foreigners on domestic flights within Egypt? If not, could you give me an example of what an Egyptian might pay on, say, a flight from Cairo to Luxor, and what a foreigner might pay on the same route? I understand that foreigners pay quite heavily on domestic flights, so am wonder whether Egyptians also do. I am just trying to see whether there’s any possibility at all of a low-cost, no-frills airline operating domestically, but if Egyptians already pay far less than foreigners, it might not be worthwhile.

I do not see any reason to make a foreigner pay more than a national in a domestic route !!! Fares are the same for all,AFAIK.

A low-cost would be successful in Egypt if using a 100 seater...Emb 170, Emb 145, Fokker 70, ATR 72,...

But in a number of less-developed countries nationals and foreigners pay different fares - which is often substantially different.

Everybody pays the same, or at least they did when I visited about 10 years ago. A flight from Aswan to Luxor on Egyptair cost £20 booked in the UK. The same flight booked in Egypt was the equivalent amount in Egyptian pounds.

Hope this helps.

Having been in Egypt recently I can say that foreigners actually do pay more for the domestic flights (You don't gain from being in Egypt if you're not a national).

Examples from the travel agent I used:

CAI-LXR Economy Egyptair
170 EGP one way = c.a. 25-30 US$ for egyptians (Fare code K"EG")
US$ 115 one way (Normal Y fare code)

So there is a big difference.

Foreigners do pay more just like the old Soviet Union days.
