Charter-trash Stupidity?

Tue Jun 29, 2004 2:43 am

It is often said that people going on holiday leave their brains at home. Today I flew back to Belfast from Corfu with Excel Airways. The flight was excellent, but when we were walking across the ramp to the terminal in the rain, I noticed a bunch of guys about 18, who had been on the plane, huddled around the door lighting up cigarettes. I know the crew usually remind everyone smoking in the terminal is only permitted in the designated areas, but I think smoking on the ramp in the rain is just plane daft. And dangerous?
Just thought I'd share.

Yeah indeed stupid. Just as the fact that people use their cell phone in mid-air while during entering of the plane AND the taxiing there has been said that the cell phone should be OFF!

Not as bad as somebody at BRS who used the wing and engine as a shelter to light his cigarette. Bear in mind this was after a miniscule flight of 50 min flight from GLA. I've never seen airport staff run that fast before, yelling at him to put it out! He was suitably mortified when he realised how stupid he was, especially with several of us staring at him in disbelief.

Since smoking is banned in most civilized airports and on all airlines maybe passengers should be denied boarding with cigarettes/lighters? BTW, especially lighters. It may be disturbing for some smokers (including me  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ) ,but will make things easier for stuff and non-smoking pax, since there is always someone who smokes despite the ban.

Smoking around Jet fuel really isn't that dangerous. At my first job I worked for a small commuter airline that flew Be-99. I think I was the only mechanic in that hangar that didn't smoke. Guys smoked all the time around open fuel tanks. Even the Director of Maintenace smoked on the hangar floor. Now if it was AvGas that would be dangerous.
