And the airplane? Let's hope when the plane is heavily damaged that it's not a 737-800, because that would ruin the 737NG perfect record of no write offs. (Of course a rather trivial thought compared to the victim, let's hope he only has minor injuries and recovers well).

Oh dear - I hope the injured person will be OK. It's really scary that someone was able to put an explosive device on an aircraft like that.

How sure are we that it was actually a bomb ? Wasn't there a Thai 737 that blew up on the ground because its aircon packs overheated ? I could be miles off, but I seem to remember something like that.

MEA-707, who the hell cares about the plane?

Hope that the victim is ok, and that this incident will be thoroughly investigated to check out how that bomb got on board of the plane.

MEA-707:

There's always a first for everything. One day, God forbid, it may be the turn of the 777. At least no one was killed by the blast and the aircraft was almost empty. Better on the ground than in the air.

JGPH1A:

I think the Thai 734 was meant to be carrying the PM, but no you've confused me as to whether it was a bomb or the a/c.

The a/c came from Izmir hence the package came onboard there. According to "spiegel-online" exploded a package in the aircraft while a cleaner tried to open it.

I can't believe how the news channels have responded to this - Sky News just said a bomb has gone off then returned to their "main story" about giving power back to Iraq. Was it really a bomb?

makes me wonder about last night when a so-called security camera exploded, how the heck can a security camera "explode" and blow out the 1st floor windows???
As for the plane ive heard theres a possibility of 2 people being injured, I guess security will be stopping anyone from leaving the airport, and having a good look at the passenger manifest.

It wasn't a big bomb (if it already was a bomb) I guess because (only) one got injured.
But just as LVZXV said, better on the ground than in the air.

Do we already have pictures BTW??

The above mentioned source (Spiegel Online) says that three cleaner onboard were injured, the one opening the package lost a finger.
The A/C looks as not having any damage seen from outside.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3849743.stm :

There has been an explosion on board a plane at Ataturk airport in the Turkish city of Istanbul, police say.
A cleaner on board the Turkish Airlines plane was injured in the blast, which happened after the passengers had disembarked, police said.

The plane had just arrived on an internal flight from Izmir on the Aegean coast.

Security in Istanbul had been stepped up for a summit of Nato leaders, which ended on Tuesday.

According to Finnish media the bomb was very small and it was located in the WALLET which aircraft cleaner found from the aircraft. Therefore, the cleaner wasn't wounded luckily so badly.

Thank God nobody was killed. It's certainly not a great time in Turkey right now with the many tensions from the Kurdish uprising to the NATO summit....

I hope they find whoever was responsible for this soon. Hope things return to normal in that beautiful country.....

As the others said, who cares about the plane? We are all aviation enthusiasts, but even aviation enthusiasts should know that human life is more important than a hunk of metal.

They actually state that it was a 737-400 of TK...

My first thought was: Mr Bush? He was supposed to leave 2 hours later so it might be that the 'bomb' was actually supposed to disturb the NATO-meeting in some case and the cleaners crossed that plan... But with such a small bomb? pretty weired thing...

It was a very small amount of plastic explosive located in a wallet left on board. The person who found it was cleaning the plane, they lost a finger but are otherwise ok. There was no damage to the plane itself. This is what I gather from CNN.

Hello everyone,

Let me give you all the details.
The plane is TC-JFD "Rize" 737-800.
It arrives from Izmir (ADB) to IST at noon.
After the passengers leave, cleaning crew comes in and they find a wallet.
When they open it up, 2grams of C-4 plastic explosive ignites.
The 2 wounded are the cleaning crew. The plane was getting ready to depart for Stockholm.

There is little damage on the plane, only the seat that the wallet was found on burned. The plane should be back in operation in a couple days, if not tomorrow.

Indeed glad that no one was killed nor the plane written off. Yes, human lives are concern number one... but it may be worth noting for people like Tristar500 that there are more than quite a few people out there who'd give much more than a rat's ass about the plane.

I personally am one such who would feel terrible about the loss of lives and at the same time also mourn the loss of an airplane which for me is an ultimate example of craftmanship and beauty, a being with an identity all its own despite the metal exterior and which gives wings to all my dreams and aspirations.

Yep, I do care much more than a rat's ass about aeroplanes Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Wanna know what it sounds like to me?

Like somebody whose pocket was picked once to often and then he got pissed and now carries a "boobie trap" wallet.

Sucks for the cleaning person. I hope they can sew the finger back on.

I find it odd that El Al pulls out of Turkey because of security concerns and then the next day a bomb goes off on a plane. Are these incidents somehow related? I hope not  Smile

El Al suspended the flights because Turkish authorities no longer let El Al air marshals walk around with their guns outside the terminal area. (at least this is what they tell)

For example, air marshals on Delta leave their guns at the terminal if they want to go into Istanbul.

However, Israeli security forces do not want to surrender their guns even if they want to get out of the airport.

I think this is a detail that will be worked with in a week or so.

With all respect to the Isreali airline (I know they have one hell of a job to do, and boy do they do it well) it is a little disrespectful to force their arms policy on a sovereign nation. If the turks do not want guns on their streets that must surely be their choice. I do not see how that jeopardises EL AL's security.

Someone also mentioned Istanbul's "bad security" and indeed attributed the blast to it.. has this individual been to Ataturk? I would hardly describe it's security as lax. The turks have been dealing with the terrorist threat for years and are well used to it

The eventual ramification is that now the TSA will be inspecting wallets along with your shoes.

I would not chalk this up to bad security, I have never had my wallet inspected.

Last weekend, going through security at Lambert Intl. Airport, the TSA person did inspect my wallet along with my two friends' wallets. I even gave her a weird look b/c if there was something like a bomb in there, all it would do is blow off my ass cheek. Anything that small will only hurt the wearer. I am glad they looked through stuff like that and I am would rather see them over do it rather than bypass a potential threat.

Update : It was a very small purse. The C-4 was actually hidden inside a lipstick. It was a woman who brought it in. She belongs to a Marxist group (basically she was "trying to protest" the Nato summit)

Police has identified the woman and they are on search for her in entire Istanbul.

With regards to the security in Istanbul, things are usually very stiff here. During the Nato summit, you actually couldn't get into the airport area by car. After a security check at the nearest highway exit, you got on to a shuttle to reach the terminals in Istanbul.

But to remind you, this little thing was actually brought into a plane in Izmir not Istanbul

Soups:

I dont know why El Al pulled out of IST but I can assure you that security at IST is excellent. I have been through there a couple of weeks ago and the security was better than at LHR. They screen you fully once as soon as you enter the building, before you even check in, and then again at the gate!

Secondly the flight originated in Izmir so if we are to blame any security it should not be IST.

And still, we can not even blame security because a wallet is compact, fits within a pocket, and can easily not be passed through the conveyor belt, while the metal detector can not detect plastic explosive. This could have happened anywhere. Fortunately, the damage and injury of a small amount of explosive is small.

The only way to prevent this is for secuity to physically check everyone's pockets, rather than just asking you to empty them. And even so, the security guy would have been injured if he found the wallet and opened it!

There is no perfect fortress. Thats all.

Cheers!

ZK, the aircraft was NOT a writeoff, nor was anyone killed.
The cleaner got what (s)he had coming on opening lost luggage, should instead have handed it to security for checking and returning to the owner.
Maybe someone else would have been hurt but more likely they're careful with opening stuff there as you never know what may come out (some people travel with poisonous snakes and other animals in their luggage for example).

Most likely the explosive was not meant to go off on an aircraft but for use as a handgranade or whatever to be thrown to a car with NATO functionaries.
After all, the owner of the bag is a known communist millitant...

The incident airplane was incoming from İzmir. The security in İstanbul is annoyingly too tight due to NATO summit. The so called explosion was a result of 2 grams of C4 which is not possible to detect with the screeners. Obviously an extremist trying to provoke NATO summit.

The media and the responsible people should not give more attention than it deserves to this incident, overrating these kind of incidents will serve only the purpose of the bad guys.
