UA To Start ORD-SHANGHAI

Thu Jul 01, 2004 2:29 am

''United Airlines has filed an application to inaugurate service from Chicago's O'Hare Airport to Shanghai's Pudong Airport. If approved the airline plans to start a daily nonstop service on October 31st using its Boeing 777-200 with plans to upgrade to a Boeing 747-400 from the 2005 summer season.''

is that the only airline that will offer non stop between the 2 cities?

yes sir, UA is the only carrier from ORD to China although China Eastern used to fly to Chicago. AA desires PVG and HKG and from what people have been saying in the forums, it sounds like AA will get HKG

Read closer and it says "has field". United does not have permission to fly the route yet, and American Airlines has also asked to fly the route. Who will get it is a tough call, they each have their advantages. UAL already offers three daily non-stops between the US and China (SFO-PVG/PEK and ORD-PEK) and is established in the market, however, they are also in a major financial hole right now. American Airlines would be a new entrant into the market, opening it to more compieitition, and are also in a much more sound financial state, though they can't start service until 2005 (not a huge disadvantage, it would only be two months after UAL plans it) and are not established in the China market.

Hong Kong is seperate for these negotiations. This is for mainland China. AA could start ORD-HKG next month if they wanted too.

14 slots will be available this year to incumbent carriers. That means the slots will either go to United, Northwest or be split between the two.

Another 21 slots will be available in 2005, open to any carrier.

Will the route be operated by a 744 or 772ER?

Does that mean Northwest will begin service from Chicago to the Orient again?  Laugh out loud
