Apparently they have.Birmingham's exec's and politicians welcomed Continental a year or so ago and they showed them around and expressed their interest in having Continental add Birmingham to their route system and they did.The same pitch is being made for American. Some of the business community are explaing about the work that they do in South America and so on,and the need for Birmingham to have better access to Latin America. So in some shape or form American will explore the opportunity.

I'm not sure what kind of load factor they would get on this route. But I welcome the new service if in fact they do implement it. My question is would the service be on an RJ? I wonder what kind of loads AA is getting on their 3 F-100 trips to DFW daily. Also, new info, UA is pulling its 2 daily nonstops to ORD on June 7th which will be replaced with 2 RJs. TWE has also announced it will cease service completely to BHM sometime in March. Bad news for BHM lately.

Right now with American's only service to DFW, (with F-100's) increased service to MIA would be welcomed. Whenever I walk by the American gate in BHM the load factors seems to be pretty high, I wonder how the load factors on the proposed MIA service would be? Currently southwest flies to a few cities in Florida and Comair flies to Orlando so Miami would be a welcomed addition. Now that TWE is leaving on March 2nd I think Southwest has a bigger presence in BHM, soon it will only be southwest and Delta if we dont watch it..  By the way its nice to see someone else here is from Birmingham.... "BHMAL"

Seems like BHM is some kind of strange market dominated by DL? I know the local leadership convinced CO to come in with large jets and I think they cut back to RJs when load factors didn't develop. Then I was really excited with the US RJ service from DCA to BHM but then soon that was dropped in favor of Metrojet from IAD, which I'm not sure is still flying? Avoiding ATL becomes a full time job in traveling to AL.

The more news that i hear from Birmingham the more it seems unlikely of the route ever developing.Birmingham will have to make some sort of pitch for it to start.

I think BHM could definitely support at least an RJ to MIA on a daily basis. My guess is CO has the big market share to Latin America now via IAH. US is also scaling back service in BHM. Summer sked shows 1 trip to PHL down from 2 and 2 trips to LGA down from 3. I'm sad to see United go. I remember flying them nonstop to LAX in the early 80's. NW is increasing its service to MEM by one flight this summer. They seem to be doing well. I've flown their BHM to DTW nonstops several times this year and they generally seem to have good loads. The late trip back from DTW is sometimes a little light. Also good to see someone else from BHM on here!!

No More Metro Jet In BHM

Sun Feb 20, 2000 2:55 pm

Tomindc,

no I believe that the MetroJet left town only after a few months of direct non stop service to Washington. US Air had gotten TWE's old gate in the B concorse and they were hoping for high load factors but like mentioned above the city officials talked an airline into getting certain service, and then the city couldn't support it.

BHMAL, Is United dropping their 737 service from Chicago or were you refering to the LAX service?

Regards

Brian
