Eithiad To Buy New Widebodies

Thu Jul 01, 2004 4:43 am

This might be a little old as it came accross Bloomberg this morning.

Eithiad is looking to buy 38 widebodied aircraft from either Boeing or Airbus. The types would either be A330/A340 or 777/7E7. They may make an announcement at Farnbrough in July. Any one have any other inside info on this?

Actually there isn't a URL. You need a Bloomberg terminal (a financial services tool essentially) where you can access news and financial data for different companies. I think it said that they are going to lease a ew more 330 that are 2nd hand.

Etihad is having trouble finding readily available A330s, hence they inducted the A340 and a 767 to fill the gap. Now they are looking at the 777s stored in the desert.

The A330s they currently have are 2nd hand, I think ex-TAM.

That would be some expansion. Will Abu Dhabi become another Dubai? Very interesting development!

There are plenty of used B 777-200s of UAL lying in the deserts of USA, plus EY can take some the undelivered brand new B 777-200ERs of Delta's from BOEING at a discounted price.

There are more used B 777s avbl than A 343s/332s in the mkt today.

The 2 A330s they currently operate are ex TAM aircrafts.
Etihad seems to be expanding really quick, they've been up since last fall I guess.

Having spoken to Etihad the info is they do not want P&W powered B777s but RR. Then again if the price of the United B777s drops to bargain levels and availability time scale becomes a driving factor you could see them fly out of the desert soon.

Ushermittwoch,
even ConcordeBoy can´t deny that there are more jobless 777s than A330/340s at the moment. But none with RRs as much as I know.

You are right the stored 777 fleet is higher in count than the 330/340. But, that is because Boeing has found homes for them, wish they'd focus on selling/leasing their own product!

The projection stated by Nyc777 is absolutely correct. Etihad is planning to have about 50 aircraft by 2008.

There is a lot of projection for growth in Middle Eastern/Asian/ African travel. Etihad is looking to get a jump start on this and prosper along with EK (who have 49 A380) on order.) Not to mention that EK has an additional large order for widebody airbus and boeing due for delivery in the next five years.

The pattern for the Gulf airlines is predominantly growth, my concern is that there will be an oversaturation of airplanes in the region causing congestion and delays similar to what Europe experiences sometimes.

What do you guys think?
