The shortest runway in commerical use is 400m long. It is used by Winair with a DHC Otter. The airport is 7 min away SXM. The runway is permenently closed and the pilots that fly there have to get a permit to fly there or something like that. Sorry but a forget the name of the airport.

P.S. Welcome to the forums

I believe it is Dublin Airport. As shown by this transcript between 2 Aer Lingus flight crew.......

Aer Lingus Flight 101 was flying from Heathrow to Dublin one night, with Paddy the Pilot, and Shamus the co-pilot. As they approached Dublin airport, they looked out the front window. "B'jeesus" said Paddy "Will ye look at how fookin short dat runway is". "You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Shamus.

"Dis is gonna be one a' de trickiest landings you're ever gonna see" said Paddy.

"You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Shamus.

"Right Shamus. When I give de signal, you put de engines in reverse" said Paddy.

"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus.

"And den ye put de flaps down straight away" said Paddy.

"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus.

"And den ye stamp on dem brakes as hard as ye can" said Paddy.

"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus.

"And den ye pray to de Mother Mary with all a' your soul" said Paddy.

"I be doing dat already" replied Shamus.

So they approached the runway with Paddy and Shamus full of nerves and sweaty palms. As soon as the wheels hit the ground, Shamus put the engines in reverse, put the flaps down, stamped on the brakes and prayed to Mother Mary with all of his soul.

Amidst roaring engines, squealing of tyres and lots of smoke, the plane screeched to a halt centimetres from the end of the runway, much to the relief of Paddy and Shamus and everyone on board.

As they sat in the cockpit regaining their composure, Paddy looked out the front window and said to Shamus "Dat has gotta be de shortest fookin runway I have EVER seen in me whole life".

Shamus looked out the side window and replied "Yeah Paddy, but look how fookin wide it is".

I'm not sure if Tegucigalpa, Honduras (TGU) has the shortest runway, but I know is the second most dangerous international airport in the world; not sure who the first one is. Taca used to fly a 763 a few years ago, now the largest aircraft that lands there is American 757. I know they have specific pilots for that specific route and it's always flown by two captains. Also they are required to get a checkride every 90 days I think, as opposed to every year or whatever it normally is.

Little Whale Cay/Bahamas (MYBX) has a runway that is 2,000 ft. long. However, the island ain't that long, so they built a CURVE in the runway!

A good contestant for a very short runway is Cat Cay/Bahamas (MYCC): 1.100 ft.

I think its the old closed down airport in Harbour Island, Bahamas. I forgot the name of it. Can someone please refresh my memory. I know they shut down the airport because the runway was too short.

This question shows up every once in a while.

The answer, as alluded to by the first reply, is Saba, Netherlands Antilles (SAB), served by Winair with a Twin Otter. The airport isn't permanently closed; it still gets regular service. The runway is just under 400 m (~1300 ft) long. One view of the airport:

This photo gives you an idea of how mountainous Saba really is:

That tiny runway is pretty much the only flat area on the island; I know, since I spent a week there.

Edit: Oh, by the way, that's the shortest runway with regular commercial service. I've been on a four-seater which landed on a 500-ft grass strip, not a real runway.

There is a private paved runway near where I live that is 410x12ft.

Also, the just a little trivia for our Colorado members. The shortest paved public runway in CO is 6/24 at Ft. Collins/Loveland Mun. 2273ft long.

Actually, the runway is recognized by aviation agencies as being closed due to it being so short. However, it still does get service but only from the Twin Otters as their pilots are specially trained to land there. So in reality it's not actually closed.

I agree that Toncontin (TGU) has a very short runway and difficult indeed. TA use A320 instead of the B737 that are no longer in service for TA. Few weeks ago, I saw a B737 of CO.

Not counting helipads, the shortest runway would be one of these:

The runway on the Kuznetsov is around 300 metres long, so is some 100 metres shorter than the runway in Saba.

There are smaller aircraft carriers out there, which would have shorter runways than the Kuznetsov.

Is that a SU-37 on the deck? That pilot must have some serious balls, one helluva catapult, or both!

The Su-37 naval variant does not need a catapult. Raw power and skijump only.

Are these Russian carriers smaller than the UK mini carriers (e.g. HMS Invincible) ?
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

This one may be shorter than the aircraft carrier, but I would like to see your face if you were in this plane!! Big grin
It's 1207ft (368m) long and is serviced regularly by small props!
It even has an airport code (AIL).
Check out the GPS!!

Cheers and enjoy!

Disney World has a STOLPort that was built for, duh, STOL aircraft.

It's very very short, although I don't have an exact length. Although it's closed, it is still used for helicopters and select airplanes.

When it first opened it was used by Shawnee Airlines which provided service from Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World. There were 7 daily flights to Disney using Twin Otters and the flight duration was 15 minutes. It was actually built to accommodate Eastern Airlines (Disney's official airline at the time) but Eastern never initiated service. The most common use of the runway now is for RV parking during peak holiday periods (Christmas, Easter, 4th of July) and special event parking (Disney's Wide World of Sports). Helicopters are frequently seen there, too.

A unique feature of the runway was how plane arrivals were announced. When a plane landed it would roll over metal strips which created "chime" like tones. Of course, the tones were arranged and tuned so that you would hear the beginning of the song "When You Wish Upon A Star" as the plane rolled over them. Many of you may notice that Disney Cruise Line continues that "arrival tradition" by having a ship horn that plays the same tune when arriving into ports-of-call.

Here are some photos: http://www.mcjackie.com/stolport.html

You're welcome, Aa7E7!

My Dad actually flew into and out of the STOLPort on one of Shawnee's flights. The steep descents to the runway, combined with turbulent thermals during Summer, made for some hair raising approaches.

I think aircraft carriers steal the prize, especially those of the British, Indian, Italian, Spanish and Thai Navies (built for Harriers). Russophile, Kuznetsov is the only operational carrier in the Russian fleet, right?

Here's an aerial view showing the runway off to the right of the Magic Kindgom Parking lot.

It has been closed for many years, but the US Forest Service had a strip called Hoodoo in Idaho. IIRC it was about 1200' or 369M long, but it was about 8000' elevation in the Salmon Mountains. Worse still, it was not level and it was loose sand. (decomposed granite)

Wish someone had a picture of it.

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Admiral Kuznetsov is the only operational carrier. The Ulyanovsk, Minsk, Leningrad, Novorossiysk and Moskva have all been scrapped. The Varyag, in the same class as the Kuznetsov remains unfinished. The Admiral Gorshkov has recently been sold to India.

There were quie a few very short runways in Laos during the Vietnam War's quiet cousin, the "Secret War". These were serviced by Air America (AKA the CIA).

Some had up and down slopes, so that you would sometimes land with a positive rate of climb. A few even had turns in the middle! Unfortunately I can't find any pics with Google, curse it!

Nah, the shortest would be a pasture about 200 feet in diameter. Fence on the perimeter is okay, trees are definately not okay.

Put a big, reinforced pole in the middle, modify a Cub to attach a rope on top of the fuselage in between the wings (can be released from inside the cockpit, of course). Now, in order to take off, you circle around the pole, going faster and faster, until you reach enough speed to take off (in a Cub, that's not much, of course). Then release the rope, correct the yaw, and fly off. A Cub can land in a 200 foot field (watch out for the pole, though).

Saw pictures of the airplane, the pole, and the field in Popular Mechanics many years ago. They showed a sequence of pictures that actually showed the Cub taking off. I am guessing about the 200 feet figure, but that sounds right (I don't remember the exact number). A Cub needs a little more space to land than to alight in this fashion.

I have a list ( oldish ) of around 9000 airports that I collated from various sources on the net, each with Airport Code, Name, Country, Runway Length, Elevation, Lat/Long- if anyone wants a copy email me...

Anyhow in this case, the shortest runways listed are ( apart from those with null values )

LIV - Livengood, United States - 1050ft
GLQ - Glennallen, United States - 1070ft

The longest two are

HRE - Harare, Zimbabwe - 15500ft
UTN - Upington Municipal - 16076ft

I can't guarantee the accuracy of these but having the lat/longs has been great for waypoints in my GPS, though MS Flight Sim Flight Plans work well as well!

Cheers

It's odd that Gozo has such a tiny runway, as from the picture it looks as if there's ample land to build one of a more useful length.
