CO/COEX Service To 6 New Mexican Cities

Thu Jul 01, 2004 10:49 am

"Continental looking to add more Mexico destinations
Wednesday June 30, 6:44 pm ET

HOUSTON, June 30 (Reuters) - Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL - News) is looking at six more cities in Mexico as possible flight destinations and expects to add at least two of them to its schedule this year, a company official said on Wednesday.

The fifth-largest U.S. airline already flies to 28 Mexican cities, said Pete Garcia, Continental's staff vice president for Latin America.

"We're looking at about six other cities right now. We may not fly to all those six, but we'll fly to at least probably two of them, I can tell you right now," Garcia said. "We'll probably be up, by the end of the year, to 30".

I think they have serious plans already to fly to Oaxaca and the new Queretaro Airport as soon as it is ready.

I think other feasible destinations for CO in Mexico could be HUX (Huatulco) and Loreto, Baja California (not sure if they are flying there already though).

They should also consider Campeche, Ciudad del Carmen, Minatitlán/Coatzacoalcos (these last two very important petrol centres) and even Jalapa should be considered as they have no international link and the capital of the State of Veracruz is booming quite a lot.

Anyone here shares my opinion? What do our Mexican friends think?

Cheers,
Victor.

CO already flies to Ciudad del Carmen and Oaxaca.

I would venture to guess that Queretaro is a safe bet. I also think it's possible to see new cities in Minatitlan, Culiacan, and the surprise of Ciudad Victoria. Of course, Zacatecas and Hermosillo are two cities that had service dropped but could see them come back. If there's service to Huatulco, it will probably be similar to the Manzanillo service (3 times per week).

Less likely in my mind would be Campeche, Loreto, La Paz, Ciudad Obregon, Poza Rica, and Tapachula.

Queretaro should definitely be on top of that list. Of course, they won't fly there until the new airport is operational.

What do you think about Cuernavaca (CVJ)? Could that be a possibility?

Culiacan, Hermosillo and Zacatecas sound like strong candidates for me.

Bernardo

I think Cuernavaca is indeed a possibility. It is quite a large city now, it has a good standard of living, it still has some important business to certain degree, it is surrounded by many towns and small cities were many foreigners live or visit, and it is close enough for people living in the southern suburbs of Mexico city to catch a flight from there, more so an international flight.

I think CVJ would definitely support a COex RJ three or four times a week, if not daily.

and terrible news for Aeromexico

Come September these two are not just codeshare partners, but members of the same alliance. AM will have its code on some if not most of these flights.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

BJX (León), Queretaro, CVJ, COZ, and maybe Jalapa (I'm not sure if ERJ's could do it in the 'Lencero') should be not on top of the list but operated at this time.

Continental already offers service to BJX, and has for quite a long time, with ERJ and 737 service several times daily to IAH.

Independent of this forum, I overheard two COEX pilots discussing schedules, and one mentioned "the new Queretaro trip" before my last DAL-IAH flight. Based on this, I would bet that the QRO is among those on the way for service by end of this year.

I mentioned this in another thread, but maybe it got overlooked:

The July schedule has a little surprise; some folks might say a nasty surprise: CLE-MEX one-stops operated by an ERJ. Flight time is about 6 and a quarter hours with time off for good behavior in SAT.

I really don't mind flying in an ERJ, but the longest flight I've done is a little over 2 hours; 6+ hours would be a challenge

I'd love to know whether through CLE-MEX traffic is a significant number on these flights; you CAL guys want to keep us informed?

CLE-SAT-MEX has more to do with crew scheduling than anything else, it's a new trip for the CLE-based COEX jockeys. I think it had something to do with the fact that IAH-SAT is a high-density route with few (if any) ERJ's scheduled in on a regular basis, so doing the trip with an IAH crew would be inefficient, and also that we wanted to return CLE service to the second-tier Texas cities of SAT and AUS, and this would be a good way to move crews in for SAT-MEX. Expect to see similar scheduling for forthcoming XJT point-to-point routes.

As far as CLE-MEX, we are expecting SAT-MEX to be a primarily O/D-driven route, so I'd imagine the CRS will automatically route most passengers through IAH on mainline than put them on an ERJ for just more than six hours. I can't be 100% positive, but this is what seems pretty logical to me. I could have sworn we used to operate CLE-MEX nonstop on a seasonal basis years ago, but I could be mistaken. I always hear the rumor of CLE-CUN and CLE-MEX routes around this time every year with 737 equipment, but it never comes to fruition. Maybe with the XR, CLE-MEX nonstop will become a reality, I believe it is within the safe operating capability of this remarkable RJ.

By the way, MFE-MEX is an IAH crew.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, 777gk. Point to point with the ERJs makes a lot of sense. It'll be interesting to see what CAL tries next. With an average of almost 2 ERJs a month coming, we should see regular surprises.
