KLM MD-11 Still At MSP This Late

Thu Jul 01, 2004 1:51 pm

When I was going from the Twins game to a party, we drove past the airport. I noticed the KLM MD-11 still at MSP, it was at the BIG Northwest hangars which you can see off 5 East. NWA.com said flight was cancelled, I wonder what's wrong with the MD-11. Anyone know?

Yeah I knew it was cancelled due to maintence, I wonder what happened though? Probably something dumb like a de-ice system!  Wink/being sarcastic

Yea... deice and anti ice systems are real dumb when you're picking up ice. It might be 90 on the ground, but it certianly isn't at the flight levels, in the clouds, when it's -40C. Who cares what happened to it? It broke and either the crew timed out or they couldn't get it fixed. I saw her sitting there this morning at 730am.

I know, I was just joking around. Note the winking smiley. I'm not stupid, geez. I was just wondering what happened, you didn't have to reply in such a condescending manner...  Insane

It's hard to tell what posts are complete drivel and what posts are sarcasm. People post some of the dumbest stuff here... I don't take any chances believing half the stuff that comes accross this board. Sorry if I insulted you, but it came accross as a idiotic comment.

At 5:00 this afternoon the KLM MD-11 was still in the hangar across from the SuperAmerica on Post Road. Today's KL 667/668 was a 747-400. This was one of the KLM Asia aircraft. I couldn't read the reg number from where I was. Do any NW MSP employees know what happened to yesterday's MD-11.
I would assume that yesterday's crew would work KL 668 today. What about the flight crew...are the pilots certified to operate both the 747 and the MD-11? How does that work? Thanks,
Alex

The MD11 pilots from yesterday will probably deadhead back on the 744 or ferry the MD11 back to AMS when it's fixed. The pilots are only certified on one type, the FAs on the other hand are probably cross qualified.

Yep, flight attendants are qualified for more aircraft. KLM lets flight crew dead head between several north american cities in case of plane changes. (ORD/YYZ/YUL/MSP/etc) If this is the case here all depends on how long the plane will be at MSP.

Since MSP is a NW hub and NW and KL are joined at the hip would it be possible for a NW flight crew to fly the 747 back to Amsterdam?

These MD-11's seem way too problematic. Here at SFO, I have seen KLM MD-11's overnighting several times due to maintanence issues. I wonder if these aircraft have a higher rate of mechanical problems than others, because it is very rare that I see other planes delayed like this.

They do have more mechanical problems, there's a tv serie about Schiphol and KLM and the MD-11 is the aircraft which takes up half the series because of all the problems it has.
