US Vs. UA Frequent Flyer Programs

Sat Jul 03, 2004 2:01 am

I am going to be flying a combination of US Airways and United in the next couple days, and I would like to sign up for a frequent flyer plan to take advantage of the miles I will earn. I would like some opinions on whose frequent flyer plan is better. I have looked at reward travel for each airline, and it seems that US has lower mileage requirements for a free ticket. Up to now I have been a Continental One Pass member, which I am very happy with. How do US and UA compare to One Pass? I appreciate the help and thanks for your time, Matt Goldberg.

Edit: I forgot to search for this before, so if there have already been threads about it my apologies.

It depends on where you fly the most. Since you flew on CO in the past, that might indicate you're on the East Coast so maybe US might be a better match...

I guess you'd have to ask yourself whether UA or US fly the same places you typically flew with CO. If your flying is North/South along the East Coast then join US, if it's East/West or just West, then UA is the logical plan. In the end it doesn't matter all that much since they're both STAR carriers and the miles can be used across borders. The only advantage is with bonus miles that you might be able to gain in their respective markets.

On behalf of the Star Alliance, welcome aboard!

All my traveling is generally confined to MSY/BTR-PHX. In the future after I graduate, I will probably be taking several trips across the pond as well as to the east coast. I also prefer US Airways, but of course they are in shaky financial condition. Then again United isn't exactly swimming in profits either. Anyways thanks for the insight.

Hummm, too bad here in Europe there was a special promotion with UA "bring a friend and you and your referral will each receive 5,000 bonus miles" but it was valid between april 1st and june 30th :-( I don't know if the link is still valid but you can get more information there : http://www.bonusmilesmpi104.com/member
I can try to phone UA to see if something can be done, of course if you're interested. Feel free to contact me directly by email.

Regards.

Phxairfan....if I may suggest that you might want to also check out Flyertalk (www.flyertalk.com) as there are message boards for each of the airlines. There you'll get a feel for the benefits (and downsides) of each program as well as flying that airline. It's been an incredibly useful tool for me over the past couple years (just like a.net!) and a lot of very knowledgeable people there on each of the forums. If you have any specific questions re the UA program let me know and I'll try to help.

As mentioned above, you'll be able to earn flights on either airline regardless of which metal you're on.

Whichever you choose, welcome to the *A!
