VS Switch At JFK--Why?

Sat Jul 03, 2004 8:13 pm

Hi all,
I am sorry if this has been covered before, but I could not find anything in the search.

I am wondering why Virgin Atlantic switched from T1 to T4 at JFK and also when the change went into effect (I heard that the change happened in 2003, but I fly in to JFK in early 2004 and VS was still at T1).

Thanks in advance.

Virgin Atlantic moved from Terminal 1 to Terminal 4 in February 2004. The reason was more space at T4. Also, T4 is the newest and nicest of all of the passenger terminals at JFK Airport. Terminal 1 was very nice indeed, and VS moved there from the old T4 in 1999. T1 did not offer enough space for the Virgin Club House lounge, and since VS moved to T1, it has added a third evening departure, making the clubhouse somewhat crowded.

T4 also has more shopping facilities than in T1, so offering the passengers a more pleasant terminal to wait in.

I also believe T4 has more gate space to accommodate the A346, and will be more suited to accommodate the A380 when it arrives IIRC.

Haven't some other carriers also moves from T1 to T4? I think Singapore, but I'm not sure.

Good point, when I flew VS to LHR last January, not long before the move to T4, I found little to do once I'd passed through security at T1. A few more shops would've been welcome. Though I guess it would've been hopeless to expect anything like the massive duty-free shop at LHR, my head's still spinning at the size of that  Smile

I'm sure the one time cost of moving will pay for itself in just a few months. And who knows if VS bargained for a deal with the PANYNJ....

Is there any word if America West may be moving over to T4 so that VS passengers can connect on with the new agreement?

I flew VS JFK-LHR in Oct. '02 and it was from a beautiful new, open, airy, spacy terminal so it must have been Terminal 4.

VA was at T1 then. T1 would fit your description, however.

So you must have read all the replys before posting this.  Insane

Maybe someone can address this better, but America West is also a partner with British Airways (who is also at T7 at JFK). So is America West getting the best of both worlds with being aligned with BA and VS?

Please let me know if you have more info.

Thanks.  Smile

Leezyjet, you are correct...several gates (I think approximately 4) will be refitted with upper deck airbridges for the A380. Virgin, Singapore and Emirates will operate the A380 at JFK.

I heard it had a lot to do with the A340-600. It's really long (as you know) and it was extremely difficult to make the turns necessary to park the aircraft at T1. T4 was better suited for that and the A380.

In my opinion both T1 and T4 are beautiful facilities--two of the nicest in the world.

i've heard administration at T1 is awful, and that T4 is laying out the red carpet to attract carriers.

personally, prefer T1 because the business lounge (at least for AF) is air-side rather than land-side. more efficient with overscanning TSA and long lines.
