GVA's Low-cost Terminal To Open In 2005

Sat Jul 03, 2004 9:42 pm

Geneva airport's management has decided to go ahead with the re-opening of the old 1930's charter terminal, for use by low-cost carriers from Nov. 2005.
LCC's who chose to move to the simpler and no-frills building (no air-conditioning, no shops, no lounge etc..) will pay a smaller user fee than the airlines who elect to stay in the main terminal.

easyJet will be the big user of the low-cost terminal, and Virgin Express has expressed interest.

Here's the full story, in French only at the moment,

My question is if the lower fees charged to Easyjet and Virgin Express will be reflected in their fares. My bet is that those carriers will not pass along those savings to the pax, rather will pocket the difference.

I am not a big fan of European LCCs but I favour the initiative as moving their customers to terminal 2 will un-crowd terminal 1 and do away with all those obnoxious British holiday skiers who flock to GVA on Easyjet every year. Looking forward to getting rid of the LCC crowd and all the horrendous orange Easyjet uniforms.

Will GVA not lose money by doing this?

The move will mean that the airport is earning less money from easyJet and other LCC's plus a big loss in revenue from the reduced numbers using the shops/restaurants in the existing terminal.
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

No, as in order to benefit from a lower rate, airlines which will use terminal 2 must sign a contract that guarantees a certain percentage of annual traffic growth, and therefore increased tax revenues for the airport,

This sounds very cool. Just the idea of not ripping down the history of the airport to put up a new "state-of-the-art" terminal perks my interest.
Hey Obama, keep the change! I want my dollar back.

Does this mean that we could see many more LCC in GVA?Such as Ryanair, Air Berlin etc. etc.

I thing GVA should think about building a second runway if they really want to grow up.  Big grin  Big grin

Wasn't Ryanair interested in Annecy at one time to build up a hub there?
Be sure they would call it Geneva  Big grin

Oh no, Ryanair would use Payerne airport (quite sure no-ones knows where it is outside the few Swiss on a.net) and call it Geneva-Zurich-Basel International Airport..... it's where the Pope landed a few weeks ago in an Alitalia Airbus 319 or 320 for its visit to Switzerland
