United Airlines And Why I Love Flying Them...

Sat Jul 03, 2004 10:03 pm

OK...here's the story. I was originally supposed to fly home on a 5:30 PM flight out of IAH, through ORD, to go to LGA. Last week, when reconfirming my reservations, I found out that my connections had been re-timed, meaning I would have missed the last connection through ORD, and was re-routed on a 3:05 PM flight through DEN. Yesterday, I found out from my boss that he needed me to go home tommorrow instead, so I called United Airlines, asking them to change my flight. Not only did they change my flight to tommorrow, but they also WAIVED THE CHANGE FEE. Mind you, I'm flying on a free ticket (compensation from a VDB), and I don't even have any sort of Elite status on United (I will hit Silver Preferred on US Airways for the first time this year), but they still managed to change my ticket free of charge. Anybody else have similar stories about how they managed to plead their way out of a charge?

Well... if they changed your ticket/timings, then do carriers not often allow you the chance to make further alterations free-of-charge as a result of this change? I believe this is standard practice? In other words, if an airline has changed your original reservation, then out of courtesy they tend to offer the chance to change free of charge to have flights that are to your convenience if the new times are not. At least, this is what I'd expect from any airline.

Another reservation change United does not charge for is turning one-stop routings into non-stops.

Late this past May I made reservations from Chicago to Honolulu. On the way out I connected through San Francisco, and was due to connect in Los Angeles on the way back. However, seats opened up on the nonstop HNL-ORD flight. I called and asked and they moved me no problem.

Channel 9 is definitely the major thing, but Economy Plus is also great!

You want a story about how United tried to screw me over on a change? I got a few of those, too.

I know on AA they changed my times one time and I called them to cancel it because I couldn't go anymore, and the reservations person said because they changed the flights more than 90 minutes there will be no charge even for canceling, so I lucked out on that one, but sounds pretty standard for me.

Its great to see that UA changed your ticket without any charge. However, I think you might have just gotten a nice agent there. I'm not sure that is policy. As much as I have always liked United, I tend to hear more bad stories than good.

GoAround, from what I"ve heard from other UA FFs that's my understanding.

I love them for Ch9, E+, they have a lot of great employees....and because they treat me like the queen that I think I am  Big grin Seriously, I've gotten great service from UA most of the time I fly them, and I can only think of one time in the past year (surly agent in CLE) that I've had bad service from any UA employee. Maybe I'm just lucky, but at 86 UA segments last year and 54 YTD in 2004, I think it's pretty good stats!

If any airline changed my flight times so I missed a connection, I'd expect them to waive a change fee. Even DL did it for me and thats saying something. Nothing against UA, just my thoughts.

Star Alliance and Mileage Plus are a few of my favorite things.

Just today for example, after coming back from SIN on SQ22, got into EWR at 18:22, flight out through IAD was canceled. Before i stepped up to the desk i was rebooked on a delayed direct EWR-ORD that was supposed to leave at 18:30 in first class. Was personaly brought to the red carpet club so i could figure out what day it was. 60 minutes after landing from SIN I was on the plane scheduled to arrive 1 hour before I was supposed to.

Get yourself high status on UA and they take care of you, no questions asked.

Economy + and ch.9 are all great. WARNING on a flight from LAX-SFO I was seated in Row 6 on a 737-522 and there was no window. Still the Ch. 9 and economy + but no WINDOW!!!! The lady had no problem with me asking to share her window!!

My guess is that it's part of the E+ upgrades of a/c that that was the old line and that it will soon disappear.

A schedule change on any carrier will always result in the waiver of the change fee if you decide to change.

I love flying UA because I collect flying on former great carriers. Will I add UA to airlines now deceased that I have flown on?
Panam
Braniff
Southern
TWA
Republic
Spantax
Viasa
Ecuatoriana
Aero Peru
British Caledonian
North Central
National

Real
Panair do Brasil

Transbrasil
Cruzeiro

The term 'Legacy' carriers to me has another meaning---all these great names I will never fly on again. I hope UAL does not join this distinguished company of formerly great or not so great airlines.

I've *never* had a bad experience flying UA, and that goes for both national and internation flights. They always put me in E+ with the seat next to mine usually empty (on a 320, 737, or 757)

So, I really can't complain! I really do hope they stick around!

Outstanding customer service
Channel 9
Economy +
Mileage Plus (especially upgrade certificate)
Start Alliance
Awesome onboard service
Friendliest stuff on board and on the ground (NEVER, NEVER had bad experience with United)
Ted
On time

To be honest I am not sure how United can be in so close cooperation with Lufthansa on their transatlantic flights (beside both being star alliance) Of course both airlines have good and safe crafts but when it comes to the ground and onboard service, lounges, seating comfort, in-flight entertainment and etc. there are mountains in between these two airlines...

In May I was flying back home FLL/IAD/FAR/MOW

From FLL to IAD I was flying TED and from IAD to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and MOW I was flying United and then Lufthansa. The night before I had to leave I got very sick and could not fly the next day and had to postpone my flight at least for a day. I called United and explained the situation and asked them to change my tickets for the next day and was wiling to pay all the fees. From FLL to IAD I was flying TED and it would have cost me about $150 to change it and from IAD to MOW even though I was flying discounted business class I had to pay another $150 to change my ticket. Although I had no problem paying, when united's agent found out the reason I want to change the flight she spoke to her supervisor and came back and told me I don't have to pay any rebooking fees. United - you rock!

It's time to fly (of course United)

Last Sunday I was on going to be on UAL from LAX to EWR, and the flight was cancelled due to the crew. So I called their excellent mileage plus elite reservation desk and they rerouted me though ORD and they upgraded me with one of my great 500-mile upgrades. What other milage program does that for you! I always fly on UAL and will continue to do so.

One of the reasons I like flying on UA is from what happened when I went to MIA in Nov 01 and they were forcasted to get hit by a hurricane. I drove to the airport to see if I could come back early and they charged my the $100 rebooking fee,but I couldn't get back from the hotel fast enough to catch that flight so they rebooked me again and didn't charge me the fee again.
I'm flying to LAX today,too! First time on a 747! (UA120 & 125)

I have had many wonderful experiences on UA and met many wonderful employees. I have been 1K for many years. I have had MANY horrible experiences on UA and met several HORRIBLE employees, surly, unprofessional. This week alone on five flights they have just randomly changed my pre assigned seat, in F class. They say it is for "security". Right! UA is no better then any other airline, and I do not think their service is abit worse then many other airlines. When they are bad, they are really bad! If they treat their 1K as they do I cannot imagine how badly and surly they treat the occasional flyer.

Tony Burr,

You were most likely moved for security reasons, to make way for a Federal Air Marshall. I read an article about this practice in the newspaper a while back. Bear in mind, that no matter how much you travel and how much you know, you won't know everything that's going on!

Douglasdc8 I have no problem with being moved for an Air Marshall. That is completely understandable. But five times in one week all in F! I find that a bit too "random". On one flight the person in my seat was around 18, the other around 60 something. I just cannot accept that five flights in one week "happened" to be for security when this has never happened before. That is too easy an explanation for the airline to give you.

I agree that United is the best in the US... though it doesn't compare to other foreign carriers (say Singapore... or even SriLankan Airlines for service), they consistantly have given better service that other airlines, especially CO or AA. I've flown on CO several times and I don't understand how they get those JD Power Awards... CO flight attendants are absolutely terrible. I've flown on CO economy and business class, and the flight attendants were so unfriendly. I've been a Premier member for several years now, and I know that most of the UA flight attenants are way better.

Though it's probably not really good for UA revenue stream, on the LAX-EWR or LAX-JFK flights, and I usually get a empty middle seat... I know that's not good for the financial outlook for the company, but if you take JetBlue, it's always full... and well... I'd actually pay more to have to have an empty seat next to me.

And I really think their marketing is the best. The print, tv, and mileage plus statements are first class... much better than others. All that marketing is probably also not helping UA's bottom line, but for some reason, United makes flying feel special... instead of making it feel like some long bus ride. I really hope they make it thru bankrupcy.

I love their tag line... truly... it's time to fly.
