The Airport Channel

Sun Jul 04, 2004 7:05 am

No, I'm not talking about the CNN Airport News channel that shows up in airport restaurants and bars.

I'm talking about someone putting together a program to run on the Discovery or some similar cable outlet that would cater to the aviation enthusiasts! Cameras staked out at prime viewing areas to show what we all love to watch...the jets landing and taking off!

It could be like COPS on Fox! Each program could be from a different airport. Tonight, O'Hare arrivals at rush hour! Tomorrow, Heathrow breakfast departures! Next week: Miami, Madrid and Amsterdam! Get good lighting, good access for taping, closeups of flaps, gear, etc...and even a knowledgeable announcer..."Oh, that was a jolly good touchdown on 27L by Speedbird 413," and you'd have a great show on your hands.

I know, we can only dream! But for frustrated aviation fans living in places like Podunk, Iowa, it would be great fun.

...let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Ummm..... okay then. Can I have your drug dealers pager #? He must sell some pretty good shit! Big grin

Just kidding. It would be cool, except the announcer. Use tower/ground for an "announcer".

I agree with Smcmac32msn the tower and ground would be good announcers. This sounds kind of hard to do but it is possible. Of course I would be the first person on line to buy it. I think some how putting a channel before or after Discovery Wings would be a good deal. How does Airport 24/7 sound to every one?  Big thumbs up

I love the DiscWings channel, but this would give a good chance to see different aircraft in actual scenarios. Airport 24/7 sounds like a great idea!

Plus the tower/ground would make it feel more like your actually there with your scanner.

Coming from a strong video productions backround and producing private videos, I know a few secrets. One is that ideas are by the thousands, but money isn't. It takes someone to fund a production company for their time and efforts, then the production company gives the rights to the "buyer" who then sells it to Discovery or any TV station. I'm not trying to say you have a bad idea, but you just need someone with the money and or power to give it a thumbs up. That is the basic idea of how programs are produced, yes there are other ways, but that is the most common for channels like Discovery, A&E and Travel Channel.

Neilalp. Good thing we have you. You are going to be our man on the inside when it comes time to start this up. We need more of your secrets to make this happen. Keep in touch.  Big thumbs up

Yes, sounds cool....but it is not as cool as live. I see the pics on A.net and the videos online....but it is no where near seeing it even from my car driving on the highway, let alone at the airport.

Plus, the camera angles would have to be perfect.

Also, you would never succede with a network that only has one show (unless you are The Weather Channel 1982-around 2000). A good idea would be to have live from airports during the daytime and at prime time having aviation related shows, like Airline (but with less drunks!). Also, how about live coverage at the airlines' press confrerences?

I like the Idea of the plane watching and such during the day and more along the lines of different kinds of news and airline related shows ...Kinda like MSNBC only with only airline related news. Ya know what I mean

If a channel or show ever becomes a reality, a really great episode would feature BWI. And, though they have come and gone we could throw in a swarm of 17 year cicadas doing their thing! Throw in a thunderstorm, the myriad of construction and ancient busses from the satellite parking lots and you have got a Dramedy in the making! In our hallowed D concourse and surrounding areas, they could shoot an episode of "That 70's Show."for an airport scene that would look like an authentic 1970's era terminal. Some of the Chimes housekeepers add their own spin on entertainment! But wait, there's more! Any episode dealing with BWI can't be complete without the little surly dude who is the keeper of theSmart Carts!  Big thumbs up

I don't know which has been around longer; construction at BWI or, the Orioles being a contender!

that'd be a great idea....do aviation related parodies of the popular TV shows.... "That Airport Show" or "The OC Airport" or "Good Morining MIA"

What I would want in a channel like this:

- History on different aircrafts (747-400, A330, etc.)

- History of different airports (jfk, lga, den, etc.)

- like everyone else has said, live cameras on different airports

- a show that has a roundtable discussion from industry experts on different airlines and airports moves

2013 Airports: EWR, JFK, LGA, LIS, AGP, DEN, GIG, RGN, BKK, LHR, FRA, LAX, SYD, PER, MEL, MCO, MIA, PEK, IAH

The Orioles aren't contending and won't be contending.

As for BWI, there isn't much going on there when the nation's capital is right down the road. International growth should be focused on IAD, not BWI. Baltimore is trying to become a first-rate city, when it has a third-rate infrastructure.

I love everyone's ideas so far, but if anyone remember back when the Speed channel was Speedvision, they actually had 1 day a week that was dedicated to aviation, and they had bob varsha and another guy doing a 30 minute aviation news cast, and they had shows on showing you how to fly like old war birds, and aviation travel type shows, and of course Air shows from around the states, and the Air races from Reno and Phoenix. I always loved tuning in on Wednesdays I believe it was, and tape some of the stuff they showed, I got very mad when they changed to Speed and only covered auto racing.

So maybe it can happen again if enough of us aviation enthusiasts were to write emails to a certain company expressing interest, and get aviation related companies to do some advertising for the people actually in the industry like me, and others.

Regards

Miles

Great Idea, not going to happen though  Sad
NZ is pretty boring in terms of aircraft, no airport shows are on TV anymore, they all went off air because of lack of interest.

For those that remember back in the late 80s, early 90s, David Letterman used to get permission from the PANY to film arrivals and departures out at JFK for Late Night with David Letterman.
He knew his planes and always had a great line when the planes came in...

AIRPORT (pretty much a day in the life of Heathrow) is on the Discovery Wings channel in the US, I believe they are currently running a new season, it a pretty interesting program. They cover everything; animal control, terminal evacuations, celebrity arrivals you name it - its a much more interesting show than Airline. Watch out for the Airport Marathon, it happens from time to time when they will show a whole season of the show on one day through the night - a good reason to stay up. If anyone knows about AIRPORT on DVD let me know, I am sure it is available in the UK.
