Where In The World Is Peter Max?

Sun Jul 04, 2004 10:15 am

It is spending the evening of the 3rd at IAH. On the 4th it's going to NRT, and on the 5th to EWR and then on to MAN ... That's the current plan anyway...

It has to be the ugliest airplane I have ever seen.

MarkTPA, You'll be happy to know then that it is being repainted into Standard CO Livery this year.

Not surprisingly, it's a common visitor to EWR. Quite a beautiful plane when you see it in person, at least in my opinion. When I was sitting at EWR last week waiting for my flight to IAD, the Peter Max 777 pushed back at the gate across the window from us and stopped for a few minutes while the tug was being unhooked. It received quite a few stares from impressed pax - I heard many comments along the lines of "Wow, that's such a pretty airplane." or "I never knew CO had a special plane like that." However, the gate agent didn't even take a look at it - I guess the CO employees at EWR are used to seeing it all the time.

Can anyone from CO confirm if Peter Max will be in Manchester (UK) anytime during 21-23 July 2004?

For every livery (whether standard, hybrid or special) - some will like it and some will not. I personally have only seen Peter Max in pictures and find one side nicer than the other. The side with the bigger white patch looks a little "unfinished" but it still is a beautiful scheme and I hope to see it in beautiful light one day (soon - as pointed out earlier, it will lose these colours this year).

Aircraft routing is scheduled only three days in advance, so won't know about MAN until 18th-20th.

I honestly thought that Peter Max was some form of CO letting children paint the a/c or at least design the a/c. I really have never understood what/who Peter Max was/is. Can some one please explain? Thanks again!

Somehow I think we need the music from the old PBS gameshow "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego" playing in the background.

LMAO @ Maverick...hehe...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've seldom seen a custom paint job that elicits as polarizing opinions as the Peter Max 777. Personally, I think it's hideous. Furthermore, I don't "get" Max's work. As a rule of thumb, if my 5 year old can do it, it ain't fine art.

BR715- Do you have any other info on the paint schedule?

I wish CO would have a few more special liveries, just for kicks. I know it's wholly superfluous esp given $$, but ala HP, it'd be cool to have TX, NY and OH themed birds (with the TX one being the largest, of course!)

Last I heard, 'Mad Max' is scheduled for a D check in November ... Subject to change of course, but afterwards, Peter's artwork will be but a memory.

That's exactly what I was doing when I started this thread title. Didn't expect anyone else to pick up on that... Good for you.

United777222,
Peter Max is pop artist, whom from what I've seen of his art work likes to muck with lots of abstract colors. I guess you could call his work more "psychadelic" than anything----very Austin Powers for the lack of a better analogy. He was a big hit back in the 70's.

I flew back from Milan today, and when I arrived in EWR, The Peter Max was parked at the gate. While I was awaiting my departure to IAH, the Peter Max took off. I am guessing around 3.30pm, and I think it was headed for HKG.

CO 777 C and D checks are accomplished by a contractor in HKG. So far as I am aware the repainting will be carried out there as well.

The a/c looks much better in person! I saw it at IAH I believing for HNL on July 23rd or around then. I don't know who the a/c was suposed to get publicity for? Is there any special service for flights on that 76?

Last Saturday, a bunch YUL spotters went to YYZ to be on board of the first revenue flight of AC's A345. While there, we spent some time spotting at the end of a runway. Along with the usual plane coming in, we were all spotting the numerous contrails up high. One of them was, without a shadow of a doubt, our good friend Peter Max flying up high. Probably AMS-IAH.

Does anyone have any exact idea when it will actually be repainted? Why can't they just keep the livery?

Art is something that largely depends upon the eye of the viewer. In this case, the canvas is a huge plane that my eye tells me had cans of paint thrown at it. Why some people think this improves the appearance of a 777 is beyond me. I agree with Slider's observation that if his 5 year old can do it, it isn't fine art.

There are other horrible examples. America West and Southwest have some hideous special liveries and Qantas has one of the worst too. I liked psychedelic T-shirts but as a button-down preppie would never have been caught dead in one. But at least such patterns didn't overwhelm the viewer and were the product of the peacock 1970s. Pop Art had its day and I am glad that day is over for most of us. Perhaps Max should have just painted a rectangle canvas for the wall and been done with it. I'm sure it would look good in some dentist's office. Then again, maybe a doobie would help my appreciation.

D checks require aircraft to be completely stripped of paint. CO's senior management (ie Mr. Buthune) has never liked 'special theme' liveries to begin with. So......
