AMS, Best Time To Visit...

Sun Jul 04, 2004 12:06 pm

i want to go to AMS, as does fellow photographer josh akbar. my good buddy ron told me today that noreving there would be a nightmare during the summer. so, here is my question, when would be the best time to go in terms of ease of nonreving and good photography. also, would 300mm be enough for the types of photos seen here on anet? keep in mind, i'm only thinking about going for a day or two....

AMS is lovely  Smile/happy/getting dizzy You see so many diffrent people and aircraft. I have connected there several times, but it seems that I just never have enough time to observe. As to the lens, I really don't know, sorry.

For photography a 300mm will be enough, I use a 200mm and can get along quite nicely. Although some pictures are imposible with my 200mm, a 300mm will sure be enough for all kinds of photography.

Personally I prefer the summer over the winter as the weather in the winter is more likely to be bad. Lot's of rain in winter.

There is no fence. There is a moat however, about 6 meters wide and it seperates you from airside land. There are bicycle paths pretty much all around the airport. You really cant miss the spots, they are THAT obvious  Smile

Some of the spots are accesible by public transport. For instance the excellent spot along runway 06/24 (Kaagbaan). There are no fences here at all, but there is a levy. You can find details on spotting at AMS and the bus routes at my site:

Not all spotters sites are accesible by busses though. The new runway for instance is next to impossible to reach unless you got a car or at least a bike at your disposal. You can reach the taxiway that links the new runway with the rest of the airport, but it is a bit of a hassle. Again, check my website for details.

I visited Amsterdam in January. I was next to the Vondelpark and I remember listening thr sound of all those aircrafts taking off; but it was sooooo cloudy (snowind and everything) that I never saw anyone.

My advice: don't go there in January (unless you care for nothing but the red light district  Big grin )

Now is a good time. I think year-round it's good to visit. A beautiful city in a very picturesque country. Go soon...
