Etops Requirements

Tue Jul 06, 2004 9:04 am

Does anyone know if corporate jets need to be ETOPS approved to cross the pond? I regularly see planes like the Gulfstream IV or V crossing the Atlantic or going from N. America to Asia. Do these planes, since they only have two engines, need to meet ETOPS requirements?

As a general rule no.. Part 91 does not have to follow ETOPS only 121 .. There are, however, insurance companies that require the aircraft to be under an ETOPS flight plan. That will differ from aircraft to aircraft put it is not regulatory.

Currently there is no requirement for 135 operators(charter). There some rulemaking in the pipes for these operators. This comes with the advent of the G-V and Global Express. The FAA felt that the range of these aircraft caused a need for these changes to these rules. In addition they are redefining ETOPS to mean ExTended OPerationS, and include three and four engine aircraft. Also I haven't been able to find out how this will affect Part 91 operations(non-commercial ops). The FAA closed comment on the Notice Of Proposed Rulemaking on Mar 15, 2004 and has not issued any final rule yet. The JAA is also developing it's own set of standards for such operations.

This article gives a good overview of the proposal.

This is a presentation of the FAA rule proposal.

Hope this helps.
