Renovations At EWR Term C...Again?

Wed Jul 07, 2004 2:14 am

I just flew out of Terminal C at EWR on COEx last week, and I noticed that CO had made some changes to the terminal setup at EWR.

First, is CO replacing all of the gate agent desks with the new ones that are in Terminal E at IAH and C-3 at EWR? I noticed a few as I was walking down the C-2 concourse. Also, when did they replace each jetway in C-2 with an A and B side for the ERJs? How long have they made C-2 COEx only, with the gate agent desks in the middle of the hallway, servicing about 6 gates each?

I think the new LCD signs at all the gates look great, and I think that the consolidation of all the COEx ops into one area is a smart idea, but how come none of it was ever publicized?

Thanks for the info. Also, on a side note, what is with that bus service from EWR-ABE? It went out of my gate before my flight, and there was no info on the board. Why would CO bother to have a bus "flight" to ABE from EWR?

Wow, I didn't know that C-2 was renovated. Did the number of gates increase?

The physical number didn't increase, but since the ERJ has a smaller footprint than normal aircraft, they can fit two ERJs where only one 737 or larger could fit. Each gate and jetway now has an A side and a B side - when you walk down the main part of the jetway, you have to turn either left or right about halfway down to get to the correct side. In other words, they doubled the number of gates without physically changing the terminal layout.

After flying in and out EWR-SIN and SIN-EWR i was quite impressed with the airport. Check in areas are too small and you have to walk all the way down to the end to see if your counter is down there, but all in all a very nice airport.

I was also quite impressed with the security in the jetway on EWR-SIN. At least 50 port authority police and explosive sniffing dogs walking up and down sniffing bags. On top of that they had TSA and privite security companies in the jetway and outside the gate. More security than I have ever seen at an airport before. (I was on the first flight EWR-SIN so i am sure that these secruity measures have been cut back since)

If I am understanding Cory's observation of C-2, then there is a dual-jetway operation in place at that particular concourse.

With the renovations, that would mean that Concourse C would have a total of well over 70 jetways.

Will ALL COEx flights now operate from C-2, or will some continue to operate from C-1 and C-3 as well?

yes we now have more jetways in C-2. All COEX flights will now operate out of C-2. Which will be nice. I like it the way it is in IAH, and teh way it used to be in CLE.

A related question . . . will C-2 continue to service any mainline operations as well, or is it now exclusively for express operations?

It is exclusively Continental Express operations. No mainline jet could fit into the tiny spaces that are reserved for the ERJs.

UAlonghaul, I can't really make much comment on EWR's other two terminals - I have never flown out of them. I am glad that your experience was good, although I have repeatedly read that CO's Terminal C is by far the nicest and most modern out of the three.
