And what is Frontier, chopped liver? Frontier already offers two flights a day DEN-DCA, so United has one now, B.F.D.

B.F.D my ass, Srbmod. It is a much needed flight for UA's West Coast frequent flyers--DEN is a much easier connection than ORD! More flights from West Coast cities to DEN at a better frequency.

I wonder if there will be weight restrictions in either direction. United's motive for introducing this flight at this particular time is obvious. I hope Frontier can withstand this predatory move by an old dinosaur.

This route was part of the recent release of several DCA routes, Frontier also got some new routes out of this as did several other airlines. DCA is important for UAL's customers as many find DCA more convenient than IAD. Many do choose the highly networked carriers - others like the Frontier and others with a smaller route structure. B.F.D. srbmod,
If it wasn't for F9 being a small carrier, they to would just be starting service.

The perimeter rule gave F9 a head start. Now comes the big boys!!!

Not to mention UA already has a HUGE presence in IAD. They are already the largest carrier in the Washington area. This new flight will further solidify this position. UA has many frequent fliers who are extremely excited UA has this new route. Just one more way to earn miles for trips to Australia, Asia, Europe, South America, and many other places Frontier cannot take you.

I wonder if there will be weight restrictions in either direction.

Why would there be? The 757 is more than adequate to operate this reasonably short flight with a full load.

I'm one of them. I HATE driving to Dulles, and I hate dealing with that airport now post-9/11 and with all the construction.

"...to earn miles for trips to Australia, Asia, Europe, South America and many other places Frontier cannot take you."

Hmmm?

Frontier FF miles may not get you to South America, but they will get you to the UK, India, Africa, Asia and, as of December, to Australia, via Hong Kong.

Just - fyi.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Because DCA has short runways!

GIGNEIL,
I always thought of you as so anti-UNITED. You are a frequent flyer on UAL? Guess we leave room in our days for a shock like this.

F9 will offer 3 daily flights beginning July 18th.

It's always great to have different carriers on a route. Competition isn't always bad. It gives travelers more choices, and stimulates market conditions.

Way to go UA!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy This is an awesome addition to their already large number of DEN-IAD and DEN-BWI flights.

Happy flying!

What?!

I never speak ill of United. I only fly United. I only fly other carriers when absolutely necessary.

If TZ can fly MDW-SJU without weight restrictions (at least I've never heard of weight restrictions on this flight) with a 752, I don't know why UA should have any trouble with DCA-DEN. There will be headwinds, but it's a 600 mile shorter trip and UA's 752s are lower density. (180 seats vs. 200 in TZ's 752s)

We appreciate your business Gigneil...

But there can be weight restrictions regardless of distance and the fact that its a 757. Denver's heat this time of year is a big contributor to weight restrictions.

The loads have been light...

Keep in mind, though, that DEN has substantially longer runways than DCA. Jc5280- Do any 752 routes from DEN regularly go out weight restricted in the summer?

"United's motive for introducing this flight at this particular time is obvious."

DEN/DCA was the last thing United wanted. They wanted SFO first and foremost, and as second prize had a backup request for DEN to piss in F9's cornflakes. Now UA is competing on the same route with someone who has a better schedule, lower prices, and a lower CASM--not really part of UA's plan.

Maverick,
explain how F9 has a better schedule? UAL Only has ONE flight, F9 has several. Hopeful UAL will get the SFO flight (didn't know they put in for it)
and maybe add another flight using the a320.

Ual777contrail:

For what it's worth, I think UAL should have been awarded the SF flight. However, it can't happen now.

At least, it can't happen until Congress authorizes more beyond perimeter flights/slots from DCA - we're probably looking at about two or three years before that happens.

cheers

I too am confused about the weight restriction issue. I have flown on jam-packed 757s in and out of DCA several times, and it never seemed to be an issue.

The jam packed 757s in and out of DCA were probably to closer destinations. 757s can get weight restricted for various reasons. It depends on too many variables to list here though.

TWA flew DCA to LAX on what equipment? Regarding the Denver route. On Summer's steamy Northern VA days, It's hard to believe that there will not have to be some compromises operating a 757-200 regardless of passenger density configuration on the DCA DEN segment off a 6,900 or 6,200 ft. runway. I'm no pilot though, maybe one could set it straight. Certainly wouldn't be a de-rated takeoff for sure!
