Engine Explodes On Take Off From Panama

Thu Jul 08, 2004 1:03 am

On take off roll Reg. N280AT a Westwind air ambulance jet with 6 aboard including 17 yr old female patient crashes into a hanger killing all aboard and a local messenger on the ground. The engine exploded on take off sending pieces of metal into the fuselage severing a rudder cable. The airplane banked right hit the ground on 90 degree right wing down rolls inverted then slams into a hanger killing all and a innocent bystander who was at the wrong place ant the wrong time. Scary stuff I have 500 hrs in this aircraft

How does an engine just explode? Isn't it a sudden imbalance in the spinning equipment that causes it to destruct?

Any number of reasons... a fan disk could disentegrate leading to an uncontained engine failure. We'll have to wait until the investigation is complete to understand the cause of the engine failure. Truely sad...

Thank you here for the follow up on what may have caused this disaster. Of course, further investigation will take place. Will this involve the US NTSB? Was it a failure of the engine or perhaps contact damage of the engine with the runway?

Scary, if I am right this plane came down to GCI a few months ago and my airline handled it.

Black Box has been sent to US, both engines show no sign of Explosion or falure. Fuel inbalance is the New teory here.

LUICIA

Wow I was just talking to some one about the fact the fuel load they got out of Panama did not seem right. wasn,t enough to get to IAD may be they didn,t turn on the 2 switches for refueling. If only one switch was turned on only one side of the aircraft would get fuel resulting in a 500 to 800 pound imbalance. Impossible to fly . 300 pound imbalance is the max limitation for take off
