"Hand Signal" At AA's DFW Gates?

Thu Jul 08, 2004 8:18 am

I was flying out of DFW today, and as we taxied past Terminal C and A, I noticed that all of the gate info screens had the words "Hand Signal" on the second line below the flight #, dest, and ship #. I have never seen that before. What does that mean?

If they have automatic parking system controled by lights (not popular with pilots) at its out of service that could explain it. Telling crews to wait for ramp team hand/light wand directions instead

Deltaff --

The "Hand Signals" you saw on the gate boards is not for aircraft parking, rather it is for the ramp personnel. It is posted when there is lightning in the vicinity of the airfield, but not close enough to close the ramp to activity. During this time, the rampers will not use headsets to communicate with cockpit crews during pushback and engine starts.

This means that the pushback crews need an extra person to walk along side the tractor in view of the cockpit to give the signals, rather than the pushback tractor driver talking to the crew on the headsets.

That makes sense - the weather was iffy around the airport. Thanks Thunder9!!
