Pictures Of New Westjet A Pier In YVR

Thu Jul 08, 2004 10:17 am

To satisfy the curiousity of those who may or may not know about the recent opening of the A Pier in YVR for Westjet, here are some pictures of both inside and outside. Enjoy!

I believe that is only compatible with 737, A320, and 757 family aircraft.

I wonder if WS will be able to use those gates for their new YVR-LAX services. I did see a Harmony 757 at the B pier a few weeks ago, I assume the passengers went through the international departures area first? I somehow doubt it.

Jayce,

The Harmony passengers heading to LAX from the B pier clear US Customs in LAX.

I suppose that could work for WS as well, it would certainly speed up turn around times when a flight comes from say, YYC, and then goes on to LAX. I read in the WS 2003 annual report that their fastest turnaround time was 6 minutes. Quick turnarounds would be very difficult if the aircraft had to taxi from the A pier to the E pier.

Cool shots Brandon.

But I noticed in one of your pictures a startling discovery. One of the 737-700(?!!) being serviced by the dual airbridges..

Thanks for the photos.

I was at the open house a couple of weeks ago, and it's quite nice-a lot better than what Pier A used to look like. It's great having WestJet at Pier A now because the non-airside public can get close to the planes that are docked at Gates 4 and 5 and watch them being turned around.

Any idea when Pier B is up for renovation? It's the only 'old' part of the airport left. Heck, even the south terminal is newer!

From what I've been told now that Westjet is flying out of the A pier YVR will be able to shut down most of the B pier and renovate it over the next few years.

In regards to the DEW bridge
Do they clear the winglets? I have yet to see a wingletted 700 on the DEW bridge in YYC.
Seems odd that a DEW bridge would be used by westjet if they plan to have a all wingletted -700 fleet.

Yes wingletted -700's can fit.

When the aircraft arrives, the OTW section of the bridge is at a 45 degree or so angle up, which allows the wing of the aircraft to go right under it. After the aircraft has come to a stop, the OTW section moves downwards and onto the door. The winglets easily fit. If I have the time next week I'll take a clip on my digi camera of the whole process.

ahhh, I see beautiful stuff.. Glad to hear that Oscar is no longer going to be a big grouchy plane. It will be young and energetic.

hmm I didn't realize I had pictures of her.. Thought that I missed out on this old jet. My first picture on this site is that of her too.. Should rescan someday.

I plan on visiting YVR in August hopefully and I will definetly look forward to the new A terminal. I remember the B pier very well.. It was an insult to have an Airline like WestJet use that part of the airport. However viewing windows provided excellente view!

Hehe, Brandon, Now you got what I was trying to say Smile
Oscar was a rather famous plane for the airline, I can't think of any others with such a nickname,.

Wow....I've seen the other photos of the airbridge over the wing in the old airport long time ago when the B707s and other jetliners were born.
