I remember reading recently on the forum about a KLM 747-400ERF losing a winglet, and last Saturday at AMS I saw it operating normally, but still with only one winglet. Surely there is no shortage of spares at KLM. Can anyone offer a brief explanation?

Why take the plane out of service when it can operate w/o the winglet? They are prolly just going to wait until the plane goes in for regular maintenance.
