Shortest DL Mainline Flight

Fri Jul 09, 2004 3:27 pm

What is currently the shortest DL mainline flight. From what I can figure, it is LEX-CVG using an MD88. I know DAY-CVG is all RJs now and the same applies to ATL-CSG. It is not all that important, just curious...I am a new member and happy to be online - jetpixx

You are correct. Presently the shortest scheduled mainline flight is LEX-CVG.
However DL does reposition their planes between the NY airports almost daily.

Thanks for the reply. I know DL used to fly between ATL-MIA and then onto FLL for a time on the last flight of the evening on a 763. That was interesting. We once landed on 9R and then dropped the people off and stormed out in less than 10 minutes right back in the direction we came from. I found it out to land one way and then takeoff in the opposite direction, but I guess that's the way of it in the middle of the night.

Regarding the MIA-FLL segment, DL had no local rights, so they could not add passengers in MIA to terminate in FLL. However that is the shortest DL mainline flight ever at 21 miles.

After Express was gone Delta was still operating the 737-200 from MCO to TPA. A short 15 minute flight about 40 miles.

I don't know if they still offer this flight however it was ALWAYS full. Go figure.

I think it was in the summer of '89, I flew from San Diego, CA to Ontario, CA on a Delta 767. I also flew on the Delta's Detroit flight in January of 1991 that stopped in FLL and then went onto MIA before returning to Detriot.

These are my two shortest Delta flights.

If we talk about flights in the past, the what about OGG-HNL. I remember being in Lahina, Maui and seeing DL L1011 climbing out from OGG enroute to HNL every night. I don't know when they stopped flying that though.

I believe SDF still has one mad dog daily. LEX-CVG has SDF-CVG beaten by 14 miles, but both are really short segments on mainline.

They dropped the SDF flight, but yeah, it was only 63 miles. I think you actually cruise for maybe five minutes and actually on initial approach after wheels up. Big grin

Delta.com shows DL1569 as an MD-88 from SDF to CVG today. Is this an equipment change?

What about ATL - SAV? That's only 215 miles, plus its done by 757s.

Being from Lexington, I have flown on the LEX-CVG mainline DL flight a time or two. The last time was in August of 2002 on the MD88. I believe we topped out at 9000 feet.

Unless you are going way back to pre-deregulation days, Delta does not need "local rights" to carry passengers on any domestic routing.

CVG-LEX is a fun ride. I did it many times several years ago when the Widget was operating the B727 on a CVG-LEX-ATL routing. The current schedule has a daily CVG-IND B737-200 which is a quick up and down too.

Did Delta ever fly Austin-San Antonio?? Can't remember which airline tagged this route in the 90s. Just curious.

GSP to ATL is one of the shortest I have been on. One time on it, we were in the air no more than 20 minutes (thats traveling over 150 miles!!) on an MD-88.

Trust me - MCO-TPA is more than 40 miles.

I really wish they were still running that route. Now I have to fly MCO-FLL-TPA. Bleh.

Trust me - MCO-TPA is more than 40 miles. But because of all the lovleyness on I-4 it takes about 3 hours.

I really wish they were still running that route. Now I have to fly MCO-FLL-TPA. Bleh.

ATL-BHM is up there...134 miles (ALL mainline)....ATL's shortest. ATL-SAV is 215 miles, for the record...and ATL-TLH is 223. Also up there are ATL-BNA (214) and ATL-TYS (152) and ATL-HSV (151). ATL-CAE is 192.

According to the June 1 timetable...from CVG:
CMH-116
DAY-63...but, suprisingly, not mainline (I was looking to prove you guys wrong!)
IND is 98 and has 1 732
SDF gas a 732...but is 83.
the winner is: LEX @ 70 miles!!!

DUB-SNN is 122 miles...but it is probably faster as it is a 763!

In reguards to FLL: I think the only reason DL did not fly passengers on the MIA-FLL part was that nobody was stupid enough to pay for a 22 mile ticket at 12am! I'm sure DL would have welcomed it and I will bet ya that at least 1 person has done it for those 500 skymiles, at one time or another!

The ATL-MIA-FLL was always very popular, all the same....However, I believe more people went to FLL than MIA.

At one time, FLL was a booming hub...flights to NAS and PBI were common! FLL-PBI might beat out MIA-FLL! (and the PBI flight was midday and I DID see people board that flight...I think it terminated at PBI, but there was connecting traffic from places like NAS at the time)

Yuppers - the Widget once flew 3-holers between CVG and CMH. They also have at one time or another used the MD-88 and B-757.

I know that one day last week a B757 and not song, flew from JFK to LGA on the way back from Havana. Although it was proababy a chartered flight since it was from Cuba, the 757 had a 10 minute flight.

Delta also did AGS - CAE, I was on a ATL-AGS-CAE flight twice. I could see the lights of Atlanta and Augusta while landing in CAE.

DL 734 was diverted to TPA on its way from CVG-MCO! You caught it on a bad day!

I remember when they did AGS-SAV! That was short!

Yes, they did at one point, but I don't remember when it stopped. One way was was first thing in the morning, and the return in the evening... Again, don't remember more than that.

I remember as recently as the mid-1990s, DL offering services on 727s from DFW-MLU with continuing service to JAC. BTR-MOB and flights from GSO-RDU or RIC-ORF, but with the advent of CRJs, ERJs, FRJs, etc. and then the ability to move ATRs to other smaller cities, the mainline services disappeared from these places and made point-to-point flying a reality instead of multi-stops. It is a shame, too - for a place like Monroe (MLU). I read that Delta got their start there.
