What Happened At ORD On 7-9 To Cause Diversions?

Sat Jul 10, 2004 8:00 pm

There are diversions that are sitting on the ramp here in MKE that definitely don't belong. A United 777-200 N798UA, and an Air France Cargo 747-200 F-GCBM. Just wondering what happened in ORD that caused them to divert here. The passengers were taken off of UA, but I'm sure it was a lengthy wait because we don't staff customs.

I took a look at OIS yesterday (even though I was off, sad I know) and saw that MDW and ORD were on ground stops due to TSTMS. That was very likely the reason.

Bad weather in the area. My mother flew back from ORD-DSM yesterday and said that the skies were real dark and the weather was bad.

Or taking a quote from Airlines (not exact, but approximate),
"What weather? I don't see any rain outside!"  Smile

There were some really nasty storms passing through. Let's just say it's been a while since I've seen the top of the Hancock lit up at 15:00!

Adding a bit more to the story, the UA 777 came in last night around 2300 hours for a gas and go. As it taxied out an prepared to turn onto the active, the crew got a number one engine failure. I came into work at about 0515 this morning and the UA crew was just getting picked up by the hotel shuttle. There are UA mechanics up here in MKE right now working on the a/c, and I'd like to thank them for letting me poke around their aircraft for about fifteen minutes.

I live in Chicago and i can say that we had some horrible storms last night so that is what caused the diversions.

Well the UA 777 just took off as flight 9820 after an extended 14 hour stay. Now we just have to get the AF 747 out of here, and life will be back to normal.

Big time WXR in ORD yesterday. My Ex-Girlfriend was flying DSM-ORD-CLE and ended up being 4 hours late, arriving at nearly 3AM.

More storms expected tomorrow, and severe ones at that. I would plan on a lot more delays and diversions, not only in ORD/MDW, but DTW, IND, CVG, etc.
