Routes That Did Not Exist 20 Years Ago...

Mon Jul 12, 2004 1:10 pm

  • What are they (from where to where)?

  • how are they now, traffic wise?

  • What has changed since then, if any?

  • just curious.

What exactly are you trying to get at? The list that would answer your question is huge. Global air travel has exploded in the last 20 years. I would guestimate that a decent percentage of all routes now flown, especially in the short haul sector, weren't flown 20 years ago. In addition, today you've got aircraft that have a range far exceeding anything that existed 20 years ago, so toss the routes they operate onto the pile as well.

I guess I was trying to get an idea of how many routes are left. Perhaps there aren't any or perhaps they just aren't used, I donno. I figure if there was a way to plot the number over time, we can deduce a point where the number should stop and we can say "all routes have been covered".

Like the next 20 years, nothing new, eh?

    Lephron,
I think it's very broad question. From European perspective, many LCC flights between relatively small places like Poitiers and Leipzig were not known 20 years ago, same as 200 flights/week between Czech Republic and the UK, or 150 between Czech Rep. and Germany operated both by LCCs and regular airlines was something impossible in 1984. And there are many similar cases all over the old/new EU countries.

As far as routes not being used, or potential for new routes, I think there are a lot of possibilities between Africa and North/South America, Africa and Asia and probably many others.

Holy crap, you mentioned Africa and Asia. Some of those continents still have third world countries in them, and within a few decades they will be second or even first world. There is going to be a hell of a lot of travel in between them!

A little note about United4Ever's post: it really is true. I was planning a trip a few weeks ago and was looking at LCCs that land near me, so I'd have a minimum of road travel. And I came upon Ryanair, that flew from Italy to the UK I think, from an abandoned military airfield in northern Italy (cant remember the name, it was somewhere near Aviano) that was only active when a Ryanair departure / arrival was scheduled, but otherwise disused. I can bet that there are many more such examples. With the rise of the LCC concept, we've been seeing some pretty "unorthodox" routes, to put it.
    No plane, no gain.

SIA-EWR, EWR-HKG, and other routes just now being opened up by the A340-500 and 777-200ER/LR/300ER. These routes were impossible ten years ago.

Chicago-Reykjavik Icelandair served for years and never used for almost 15 years since! I wish they should come back service.

Chicago-Billings on NWA DC-10 it was very odd large plane to BIL from Chicago!
