Airtran Doing Well At DFW

Tue Jul 13, 2004 1:54 am

From USA Today. Could more flights be on the way?

"Dallas dogfight dings Delta: The No. 2 airline at the Texas airport is finding itself uncomfortably in the firing line of a battle between dominant carrier American and AirTran. "We're concerned about the DFW market" for Delta, airline analyst Daniel McKenzie of Smith Barney said in a recent report quoted by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (free registration). Delta has seen a steady loss of market share to American over the last decade, and American's plan to boost departures at DFW as it scales back St. Louis will intensify the pressure, he said. "AirTran is ratcheting up growth at DFW in three of Delta's top four markets" — Atlanta, Baltimore and Orlando — and recently launched service to Los Angeles, Delta's No. 6 market from DFW. American is aggressively slashing fares to match AirTran and adding flights on some routes, meaning Delta will "likely be affected by the cross fire," McKenzie forecast. All this comes as Delta struggles to win huge cost cuts from staff, amid much speculation of a trip to bankruptcy court if it fails. Delta spokeswoman Peggy Estes said in a written statement that "everything is under strategic review." She added that "DFW has improved profitability." The airline serves nearly 70 cities from DFW and has 265 flights daily. But April figures show Delta and Delta Connection accounted for about 17% of DFW's passengers, down more than 2 percentage points from last year. Total passengers during the first four months skidded more than 4%. American's domestic traffic jumped 23%, AirTran's 60%. Posted at 8:20 a.m. ET"

Although I don't doubt AirTran is doing well at DFW, nowhere in the article does it state that (as your title indicates).

Also, I find it hard to believe that Baltimore is among Delta's top four markets from DFW, especially since they don't even fly there nonstop.

I agree, this has more to do with Delta than Airtran.

Baltimore is not one of DL's biggest markets from DFW. The D.C. area in general only gets 3 nonstop CRJ-700ERs to DCA, that's a measly 231 seats. LAX, LAS, SFO, SAN, SLC, ATL, MCO, TPA, LGA, SEA, and BOS are definitely bigger markets for DL from DFW than BWI/DCA/IAD.

The article has some ooooopsses, like the fact that there is no DL service from DFW to BWI but it does make an interesting read.

It does make me wonder about the currant situation. I could see DL getting caught in the middle of an air fare ware between AA and Air Tran. DL , in its weakened state definitely cant take, and shouldn't take losses at DFW. If it isn't profitable, and more importantly if there is little hope of it becoming profitable it should be de hubbed.

Of course the article says the hub has "increased profitability" which for some reason I doubt. If the DFW hub is profitable, yet the other parts of the system are not, DL has BIG problems and these problems wont be solved by a simple rewrite of the pilot contract.

Lono,

Blah blah blah! You're clearly just trying to bash Delta in every way that you can, yet your points are unsubstantial. What's stopping DL from boosting their flights at DFW and dropping the fares to FL levels? In business you do what's necessary to sustain profitability, so obviously this move from FL isn't worrying Delta. DL doesn't care about its DFW market share, they downsized on their own. It's been reported numerous times that DL's DFW operation is profitable now, and DL's mass of RJs at DFW was a good decision. If DL wants to increase their market share at DFW, they will, nothing is stopping them. They just choose not to, because regardless of their market share, they've got DFW to a state that's the most profitable it's ever been. 4 years ago when DL had 135 daily mainline flights, widebodies to SEA, PDX, SFO, LAX, SAN, LAS, SLC, DEN, CVG, ATL, MSY, MCO, TPA, FLL, PBI, and HNL, as well as 30% of the DFW market, they weren't making money. And they downsized, by CHOICE. So regardless of their market share, them having such a small market has allowed DL to dodge the fare decreases. DL clearly would do something if they felt threatened.

I've hated to see DL scale back so much. They use to be so busy here at DFW with over 400 flights, complete with MD-11's and the classic L1011's going to Hawaii and such. Mainline flights still went from the satalite terminal, but that end is RJ central now. I hate to say it too, but DL is indeed in a tight spot at DFW. I've always liked DFW being a "double-hub" like ORD. But we'll see what happens. I think Airtran is to Delta as Southwest is to USAir....getting tough!

No I'm not bashing DL... They used to have over 260 flights a day there (mainline)... and they built up their DFW operation to do battle (employees were told)... they spent millions there... new cargo/mail facilities and gate expansion that was unreal... Satellite gate area.. international gate area... and now they are a shadow of their former self there... hence they continue to loose on their investment there with any loss of market share...

Lono,

Thank you for clearing that up about their investments at DFW being a loss with market share decreasing. I can now agree with you about DFW and DL. It's good that DFW is still a DL hub at all, hopefully once DL's financial state improves we can see more mainline service, especially to MSY, DCA, BHM, PBI, and PHX, all markets that DL used to and should be able to fill with mainline planes.
