How Do You Pronounce "bmi"

Sun Jul 11, 2004 1:51 pm

When I was sitting in the international terminal at ORD waiting for a flight tonight, I overheard the announcement for what was obviously the BMI flight from ORD to Manchester. One agent, with a British accent, said something like "Be-Me" while an American agent announced a gate change by calling the airline by its initials "B-M-I"

Can any of you tell me what the "proper" way to pronounce the abbreviation is in Great Britain?

Thanks

I believe it's b-m-i. That's what they call themselves when I flew with them a few times.

B-M-I. What does the 'I' stand for?

I'm not sure what it originally stood for but I think the airline is now just plain 'bmi'.

Well I looked through the history section of the bmi website and couldn't find anything that said that bmi stood for anything. I think the airline went from being called "British Midland" to "bmi British Midland" to just "bmi".

If you look at the aircraft you'll notice it's actually BMi, not BMI.
The i is part of Midland, the full name is (was?, used to be?) British Midland Aviation.

UPS trucks here still have "United Parcel Service" on them last time I saw them (which was last week) though very small.

I believe it was bmi with the i being 'international'

thats what they changed their name to right before they launched their transatlantic services from MAN

it's pronounced 'bee em eye' as somebody already suggested
although I still call them British Midland from time to time, I was born in the Midlands, about two miles from EMA so they're my home airline really  Smile they'll always be Midland to me  Nuts

Wasn't the "I" added when they started flying internationally (in which case it could be assumed to stand for International)? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it purely a domestic airline at one time? I certainly believed it to be when I was a kid and I used to watch them flying in and out of LHR to what I considered at the time to be "boring domestic destinations", but hey, what did I know?!

I would certainly pronounce it B-M-I, as others have said, but am still having a tough time not calling it purely British Midland!

BMI (British Midland, and previous companies) was started by Sir Michael Bishop, who remains chairman emaritus.
For those interested, the radio call sign is 'Midland'.
They have been around a very long time.

yes they were pure domestic a long time ago.
then they branched out into the European market.
then a few years back went transatlantic too, and changed their name to bmi around the time they took delivery of an A330 i believe.

I just looked at their site, I can't see any indication of the i being International..

although it is interesting to note the copyright at the bottom of the page is credited to "British Midland Airways Ltd" and according to Key Facts their current airline name is simply "bmi" (as of 2002)

Could be wrong

bmi don't do transatlantic out of BHX. FlyBE (= BE) is codesharing with CO.

The airline is still in a transitional period, namewise. They're changing from British Midland to bmi British Midland and will one day be simply bmi (all lower case - we are in the sophisticated new millennia, lest we forget...)

There's still a lot of confusion due to the old/hybrid liveries still in existence, but one day 'bmi' will be the norm.

As for pronouncing it, it's just like the letters, B, M and I. There was a suggestion that the LCC would be known as 'Be My' Baby but that didn't stick, probably because most people were aware of the close ties with the parent airline.

It's a shame that stuff like this happens, the airline name British Midland said a lot about the airline and it's history, and they're changing to just simple 'bmi'.

mind you.. I guess it's hard to call your airline British Midland when your full service arm does little or no flying from the region which it derives its name.

It'll always be Midland to me  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

So because BMi are codesharing with CO means you don't get a call for BMi's flight number ? Which is 6027/6026 as opposed to the CO 27/26...33/32

BMI don't codeshare with Continental.

BMI is BD

FlyBE (who do codeshare with CO) are BE

bmi is not FlyBE as they are distinctly separate companies! bmi code = BD and codeshare with UA (or rather UA codeshares with BD on the MAN routes) and I don't think they operate any services out of BHX anymore (if you include bmi regional concentrating on LHR, MAN, EMA, LBA and ABZ).

FlyBE = BE (and codeshares on the CO routes out of MAN + BHX - and perhaps the GLA and EDI ones as well), with their DHC8s and 146s operating a large programme from BHX, SOU and EXE.

As to whether the BE codeshare is called, I wouldn't know as I've still not flown and I've not been inside any airport terminal for a good number of years (going back to the early 1980s when transiting MAN T1 en route to the real spectators terraces).

Storm in a tea cup here. BMi, BMI, BMi British Midland who cares? Simple answer is the airline doesn't know what it wants it and its partner airlines to be especially LCC vs Full fare. One thing is for sure and that is one day it will change again to Virgin or be shut down for losing Lufthansa way too much money, at which time no one will care about the pronunciation.

Why is it that when someone has supplied the correct answer, (Jaspike) and someone else has also confirmed this answer to be correct, (myself) some idiots still feel the need to post wrong answers ???. Not just in this thread, but in others too.

I remember reading that one of the reasons that the name was changed ahead of the commencement of scheduled trans-atlantic flights, that the previous, common abbrieviation of BM, would not be considered as acceptable in the USA as 'BM' was often used as an abbrievation for 'bowel movement'...

411A, whilst Sir Michael Bishop has played the key role in the development of the airline, he wasn't the founder of the company (or more correctly, its predecessors). He joined British Midland in 1964, subsequently becoming General Manager in 1969, a director in 1970, Managing Director in 1972 and chairman in 1978.
The excellent history of British Midland 'Diamond flight' has loads of detail, and the history link on bmi's website is useful too.

The 'i' is totally meaningless, i promise!

2003 - bmi

2001 - bmi british midland

1985 - British Midland

previously BMA - British Midland Airways

FACT!!!!!

(There is no British Midland 'International' - it's just an ill-informed assumption people keep making!!)

By the way, the guy doing the call is probably the Irish station offcer at ORD, so the accent may have 'clouded' the proper pronunciation.... b-m-i, just like that!

The official company is still, however British Midland Airways Ltd, but as far as branding goes it is simply 'bmi'.

-------------

One for you here, ATCisgreat, showing IATA/ICAO cdes & callsigns:

bmi: BD / BMA 'Midland'

bmibaby: WW / BMI 'Baby'

-------------

And for you, Jamotcx: keep your mouth shut, or your company might end up with a little memo from bmi... (especially on the Ben'n'Jerry's front. You do turn the cabin around nicely, though!)
