Most common is probably NYC-London, and it is probably the most competitive. Not exactly sure about the most frequent though.

Well BCN to MAD by IB has got to be the most frequent in 1 day by a single airline. There is roughly 45 return services per day by Iberian alone.

Probably the most flights for a single city pair would have to be SYD-MEL with 61 return services per day (this is the third busiest city pair in the world in terms of passengers)

QF has up to 34 return services per day
DJ has up to 24 return services per day
JQ has up to 3 return services per day

Well just recalling some past threads, for the U.S.A.

I think the top city/metro pairs (not airports) include,
NYC-So. Florida
Houston-Dallas
LA-SF/Bay area

I know the Houston-Dallas routes include Southwest (HOU-DAL, IAH-DAL), Continental (IAH-DAL, IAH-DFW), Delta (DFW-IAH, DFW-HOU), and American (DFW-HOU, DFW-IAH) (plus their regionals on the same routes)

In the US, by passengers and flights, it's NYC-MIA/FLL/PBI. B6 has 18 daily flights from JFK-FLL/PBI, DL has 14 daily between LGA/JFK-FLL/PBI, and AA has 24 daily flights between LGA/EWR/JFK-FLL/MIA/PBI. Other airlines also serve this route as well. NYC-South Florida is also the largest O&D market in the US with over 7,000 daily PAX, NYC-Los Angeles area is second.

I believe PHX-LAS and LAS-PHX would most certainly be up there with all of the flights HP and SW fly to/from their hubs..........around 30 each way everyday!

There's over 50 flights a day between Amsterdam and London (not all to the same airport of course, but over half to Heathrow).

I doubt there's that many flights between Heathrow and Kennedy  Smile

My 2 cents would go to:

1. NYC - LONDON
2. MAD - BCN (Iberia's "Puente Aereo")
3. NYC - SOFLA (MIA,FLL,PBI)

There are about 25 flights in each direction london new york all airports. Capcity-wise it's the busiest. BA alone has 600 business class seats on that route, each way, daily!

Has there always been this level of demand for NY-FLL or is this just enhanced since B6 began? That's a huge number of flights.

I know that out of the top 20 routes in the U.S., at least 10 begin and end in New York.
Boston
Washington, DC
Fort Lauderdale
Los Angeles
Chicago
Dallas
To name a few.

NYC-South Florida is also the largest O&D market in the US with over 7,000 daily PAX, NYC-Los Angeles area is second.

Actually, there are more than 16,000 O&D passengers per day on MIA-NYC, which is now probably America's most traveled route (not long ago it was Los Angeles-Bay Area). This winter, eight airlines (plus El Al and Universal Guyana, though neither has local traffic rights) will offer nearly 120 daily flights between South Florida and New York City. During the "slower" summer period, there are about 95-100 daily flights on the same eight airlines.

Five busiest from NYC:
New York City-Miami (16,369)
New York City-Los Angeles (9,664)
New York City-Orlando (8,194)
New York City-Chicago (7,107)
New York City-San Francisco (6,697)

Has there always been this level of demand for NY-FLL or is this just enhanced since B6 began? That's a huge number of flights.

There has always been high demand, though after jetBlue came, numbers from FLL especially did soar. There are now less airlines serving NYC-MIA (UA and US have dropped), but lots more capacity, and flights still manage to go out full all the time. On a similar note, NYC-MIA is AmTrak's second most traveled train corridor, after the Northeast corridor.

That's right about B6 already service to FLL and load factors was very high on their flights to JFK & LGA (Sept 17, 2004). I am sure will see how is they was doing on their way to LGA.

Don´t know the equipment in Japan, London, NYC.
In Brazil, Sao Paulo (CGH) Rio (SDU) starting @6h00 am until 11h00 pm one every 30 min(average), with GOL, TAM, Varig, VASP, OceanAir.

U do the math  Big thumbs up

PS. all done with, 737-xx´s, A-319 A-320, ERJ-145, Fokker-50

And all those intra-Japan flights are done with 74Ds (747-400 Domestic). The world's most traveled airline route is Tokyo-Sapporo. Sao Paulo-Rio de Janeiro is very heavily traveled, though. Three other key domestic bridges are Sydney-Melbourne, Madrid-Barcelona, and Honolulu-Maui. Amongst short international hops, the busiest include London-Paris, London-Dublin, Miami-Nassau, and Chicago-Toronto.

JGPH1A is correct when he says that London to Paris is the busiest international route...therefore must beat London to New York (depending on whether you guage it by number of planes or number of seats)

I'd choose BCN-MAD. As Aussie747 said, there's a lot of flights only in the air shuttle operated by IBERIA daily. But the roughly 45 is actually 52 return flights. And this is just Air Shuttle: you buy a ticket with no hour, you reach the airport and fly the first available seat.

Then, there are some regular flights, also by Iberia, not able to say the number now, but just a bunch, a few ones.

Plus many flights that serve MAD-BCN-another city and come back frm another city-BCN-MAD, (for example 3966 MAD-BCN-ATH and 3967 ATH-BCN-MAD, or 6940 MAD-BCN-TLV and 6941 TLV-BCN-MAD) that have people flying just the BCN-MAD or MAD-BCN leg. These are a good dozen more.

Finally, there are also Air Europa and Spanair, with roughly 20 return flights each.

Actually, for about a couple of years, ATCs have been training new altitudes and new vertical separations that came into service more or less one year ago, improving dramatically the service between the pair. Now there are duplicated cruise altitudes and routings because the movement was at the limits.

We could be easily counting slightly above 100 round frequencies a day. I could look for the exact figures if you are very interested, now I do not have them with me.

Enjoy turbulences!!!

Original question:

"What is the nmost flown route in one day by one airline and by all airlines."

Sounds like he means number of flights, doesn't it? Not passengers. So with a bit of work we ought to be able to answer that question. As always, you have to decide what "route" means: airport-pair or metro-area-pair.

If Iberia has 45-50+ flights each way between MAD and BCN, I'll bet nobody's going to beat that for one airline on one airport-pair. For all airlines on one airport-pair, its probably still SDU-CGH.

Seems like busiest-route threads get the highest percentage of empty-headed responses of any on airliners.net.

I agree with Aussie747 and Tubulence as far as most flights flown per city pair in one day bye one airline....between scheduled and shuttle flights, IB has at least 50 per direction between MAD-BCN. I will get the exact number tomorrow.

As far as most flights flown by all airlines between a city pair that is up in the air....I do not know off hand. I would have to guess one of the USA shuttle services either between NYC-Washington D.C. or NYC-Boston. Thats my guess.

CHI-DET: 2,696 passengers per day
CHI-MSP: 2,199 passengers per day

Nowhere near America's three busiest.

Since the original question was MOST FLOWN, and did not mention MOST PAX,
I must and will remind everyone of the often forgotten Pacific Northwest.
While most of it is on turboprop.....
PDX-SEA has 78 flights per business day....39 in each direction, Horizon and UAX.....None the less, still quite busy.
