Why Do So Many Airlines Fly SIN-Jakarta?

Wed Jul 14, 2004 1:15 pm

Does anyone know why virtually every airline serving Jakarta, does so via Singapore?
Even Garuda uses Singapore as a gateway to international destinations.
I realize that it is a heavily traveled route, but I seem to remember that LF, and others can't sell seats on the flight anyway.

i know TG also has flight from BKK-SIN-JKT. but to be compared with BKK-SIN or BKK-HKG, sin-jkt is nothing.

The market is just not there in Jakarta to fill up al of those wide-body seats, so airlines are using Singapore's liberal policies to serve Jakarta as a tag on to their Singapore flights, thereby entering the very busy Jakarta-Singapore traffic. Some airlines on the route include:

KLM
Lufthansa
Air France
Emirates
Air India
Kuwait Airways
Philipines
Thai Airways
Garuda Indonesia
Cathay Pacific
Lion Air

Quite a few airlines use Kuala Lumpur as a stopover point as well:

Emirates
Qatar Airways
Gulf Air
Yemenia
KLM (from October)
Royal Jordanian (temporarily suspended)

For Garuda Indonesia, Singapore can be considered a hub as it transfers passengers from its longhaul/international network to various points in Indonesia at Singapore. On the international side, Garuda serves Amsterdam, Shanghai, Hongkong, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh via Singapore, while these flights connect into flights to Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Jakarta, Semarang, Jogjakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar at Singapore.

Though Kuwait Airways does serve the SIN-JKT 3x weekly for the time being, it does plan to drop SIN from it's schedule effective Oct 31st, 2004. Once that happens, the flights from KWI to JKT will become 3x weekly non-stop flights (and no more SIN-JKT-SIN hops).

Guess the JKT market by itself is filling up their seats.

Thanks guys any help would be great.

Longreach:

I remember seeing a VERY low fare SIN-JKT-SIN on www.zuji.com.sg.
I think it is a good site. You'd probably want to check it out.

If you want to go really cheap, you better go Air Asia to Johor Bahru, an airport at spitting distance of Singapore, just over the Malaysian border. Air Asia's fares start in the region of USD 25 one way, and none of the established carriers on the route beats that price.

Btw, I didn't include SQ in my list becaus they're not offering Singapore-Jakarta as a tag on to another international flight. For the same reason, I also didn't include Valuair in my list.

That's a very good point. I suppose it's similar to QF's network where it makes more sense to fly to Europe directly via SIN, rather than connecting in SYD if you are living in PER/CNS/BNE/ADL. Just take a look at Jakarta's position on the Indonesian map and you'll get the picture.

Just to give you one example, Garuda can even bring you from Amsterdam to Saigon via Singapore, without ever touching Indonesian soil. The system works rather well for Garuda, and they're currently looking for the right to fly into India with full traffic rights via Singapore. That might, however, be a rather tough nut to crack.

Thank you for answering my question. I now have greater understanding of the Asian air travel market.
BTW HB-IWC, Unfortunately Garuda no longer connects Pekan Baru to Singapore. The flight, which no longer effects me in anyway (I doubt I'll be going to Pekan Baru anytime soon), is of Great sentimental value. I've probably flown on that route 100 times between 1974 and 1988.

Garuda restarted the route in a SIN-PKU-PDG format 4 months ago. Flights operate 4 times weekly (Mo/We/Fr/Su) with B733. Here's today's departures at Pekanbaru:

City : Pakanbaru (PKU) 1343 16JUL PKU

Time Departure Estimated
Time Departure Aircraft
Registration Departure Info
GA 171 Jakarta 09:20 PKGZH
GA 845 Padang 11:35 PKGHQ
GA 173 Jakarta 14:00 PKGZH
GA 844 Singapore 14:20 PKGHQ
GA 175 Jakarta 16:50 17:10 PK-GWY
