Status Of The Swiss MD11's.

Wed Jul 14, 2004 10:52 pm

Hi!

I just found out on the Airliners.net photo engines that SWISS received the last A340-313X - HB-JMI. Any ideas when the MD11 will leave FOR GOOD SWISS? I will be in Switzerland in September and is it reasonable to expect to see any SWISS MD11 still flying at that time?

There are two MD-11's left operating, HB-IWA and HB-IWE! HB-IWQ is parked at ZRH in an all white colour scheme while HB-IWI is inside the hangar without titles, undergoing post service maintenance. If you're lucky and know where to look, you're able to see up to four MD-11's (maybe even 6 if TG and JL have their flights operated by an MD-11).

As far as I've heard, the last LX MD-11 will be kept in service until the end of the summer schedule, so chances to see an MD-11 of LX in September are definitely intact! Good luck!

So far, it looks like the last scheduled MD11 flights will be on Saturday October 30 (LX 8 ZRH-ORD and then returning as LX 9 ORD-ZRH, arriving in ZRH on Sunday October 31). I seem to recall reading somewhere that the very last M11 remaining will be the first one in the fleet (HB-IWA)

Does anyone know the exact location/operator of all 19 ex-Swissair MD11s (HB-IWA to HB-IWU)? Some of them, and I know HB-IWM is one of them, are operating with VARIG, some of them (e.g. HB-IWG) have been stored, while a couple might even have been converted to freighter or are meant to undergo this conversion. I'm especially interested in the fate of the 4 non-original MD11s which were acquired from LTU (HB-IWR/S/T/U), with HB-IWR being the one that was impounded and stored at JNB for almost 2 years.

Hi swiss friends.

Thanks for your information, well it looks that hopefully I'll see the end of this era. That reminds me when I left ZRH in the 16th. December 2002 to LAX and I was ready to board HB-IWM and around me I could see so many SWISS MD11's. Then when I returned in the 16th. December 2003 I could just see two of them ( I even took pictures ), HB-IWA and HB-IWE. Now when I get to ZRH in September the panorama completely changed, very nostalgic to me!

In April, I flew from JNB->ZRH, and a few days later, ZRH->ORD. There were only three MD-11s around at the time. I wonder what the odds are that I wound up with the same aircraft. (I did not check tail numbers.)

Hey N328KF.

You should try really hard to get those registrations, you flew 2 SWISS MD11's and that's a unique event, please post the dates maybe our swiss enthusiasts will give you those regs, they are good on that!
The only thing I regret about my SWISS MD11 flight is the fact that my camera was out of service during my flight and I lost the oportunity to take some shots.
