Why Is It A Pain To Book Intra-Europe Flights?

Thu Jul 15, 2004 8:55 am

I just booked a trip to Europe. We'll be flying DFW-LGW on AA, then LGW-VCE on BA.

Booking the LGW-VCE leg of our trip was a big pain in the a**. I eventually ended up booking on Expedia, which was able to take my credit card with no problem, but I did have to settle for paper tickets, not electronic.

BA.com and several other web sites were unable to process a credit card with a US address. Hardly any other web site could offer an electronic ticket. Is there a difference in the European travel infrastructure that causes this? Is part of it due to security concerns? Add that to the fact that once you get to Europe, most airlines don't have 24-hour reservations phone numbers. What gives?

It's the particular airline/travel agency web site issue. They choose not to accept credit cards from abroad (USA in the case). The same case is the other way around since many US based airline/travel agency web sites choose not to accept credit cards from abroad (EU in this case).

And I thought we lived in a global economy ...

I still can't understand why britishairways.com won't accept a US credit card.

BA.com and several other web sites were unable to process a credit card with a US address.

It's exactly the same PITA the other way around. Try using a UK credit card on Expedia.com or a US credit card on Expedia.co.uk...

Well, I was doing programming of the credit card processing web site for the company that I work for here in TYS.

In the developer docs there was this thing that I could switch on/off and we would/would not accept credir cards from abroad.

So, technology is there. It's only the decision of each particular company to put the switch on. I understand if they do not want to do so due to higher risks associated with accepting foreign transactions (as I was told by the bank's support techs that provided the solution for us).

Sounds like a security concern, which I guess is somewhat legitimate.

I've booked foreign travel on AA.com in the past. Often I have booked DUB-MAN, DUB-LHR, DUB-MUC, etc. on their site. It displayed it with all my current reservations etc. No $5 booking fee. But, yes paper tix. I wasn't charged for paper either, but that may have changed recently.

I'm going to go check now!

Mcmahonsmr --

How in the HELL did you do that!?!?! I paid $260 for the same flights, except I'm departing LGW on 9/10 and returning 9/20 (that was on BA through Expedia).

Every time I try to do that on AA.com, I get "No flights found that matched your request." I figured travel on AA.com had to originate in the US.

If this would have saved me money, I'm going to be PI**ED!

By the way, Mcmahonsmr, where are you at law school? I just graduated, trying to focus on the bar exam now.

Never mind, Mchahonsmr, I figured it out -- selecting "All Carriers" instead of AA only.

AA was $12 more per person than Expedia, so with the booking fees it's about even. Would have been nice to have all of them in my profile, but that's moot now.

SSides -

Yes, booking on AA.com is simple when you check the "All Carriers" radial. Those flights that I put in were just off the top of my head. But, I suspect since I selected flights a week apart a Saturday night stay was involved. European carriers are still very much into the Saturday night stay rule, well at least the majors.

Some of them only require a 2 or 3 night minimum.

Law School. I went to law school in Ireland and just finished an LLM at GW in IP Law. Taking NY in February - and clerking at a firm here in NY starting next week. Its tough out there, isn't it?

Star Alliance members all take US credit cards and allow booking from US folks - last summer while in europe booked LH intra-europe routes without any problems.
