Thu Jul 15, 2004 9:34 pm

As Polish newspapers inform, LOT authorities decided yesterday to create low-cost subsidiary and wholly owned airline. It will be based in Krakow. LOT vice chairman said the new airline is likely to start operations in the autumn. No further details including the airline name were given so far.

Kuba,
what would be the difference between EuroLOT and this new LCC then? I don't know much about EuroLOT to begin with, I'm more than grateful for any insight and info.

Eurolot is also LOT subsidiary airline established back in 1996/1997 mainly to reduce loss that LOT generated on the domestic routes. Eurolot leased LOT 8 ATR-72s and acquired 5 more ATR-42-300 planes that were later replaced by ATR-42-500s. Eurolot operates all flights under LOT flight numbers (it`s own IATA code is K2) and makes all LOT domestic routes and many short international flights e.g. to: Prague, Berlin, Vilnius, Bratislava, Frankfurt, Munich, Lvov, Kaliningrad, Hamburg and many more. Eurolot isn`t low cost airline although it was being discussed some time ago to change it into typical LCC.

The new low cost airline that will be launched by LOT later this year will operate as low cost and charter airline using some of LOT`s B737s. It seems LOT profits on charters weren't as good as planned (travel and tourism market in Poland is still pretty unstable) and creating new airline will help them to better their financial situation.

this isn't real comforting news. major carriers have a bad track record when it comes to creating LCCs. could this be more of the same from LOT?
