Sun Jul 18, 2004 5:51 am

According to news reports this evening

''a plane carrying 200 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing at LHR after the pilot detected a possible fault.

The Lufthansa airbus flight 4578 was on its way from munich to london when the problem emerged.

A helicopter from solent coastguard escorted the aircraft to heathrow and the plane landed safely''

Source Teletext news (London region) p334

Any know what happened?

Also Lufthansa website shows flight 4578 is the AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-BRU flight. The MUC-LHR flight is LH4764 and landed at 2056pm instead of the scheduled time of 2025pm.

I think they just got the flight number wrong (if it's true at all) - a diversion of a muc-bru flight to london is rather unlikely  Smile

According to Skynews the plane landed due to smoke being seen in the cockpit, It was a A300 that landed..
Its not the fall that kills u, its the sudden stop at the end..

Was watching planes (and eating Mc.Donalds...) at LHR this evening and did see a red helicopter with loads of guys pointing their telescopes / cameras at it probably around 7.45-8.15 pm. Don't know if that was the one mentioned but also noticed it because it came low from the north and then instead of getting clearance and crossing right over I think it kinda turned to the west?

I guess that's all I know. There were LOADS of people watching planes at LHR this evening though. The weather was good  Smile

Best (+ glad it was nothing more serious)

I did notice a runway change around this time, as I saw an aircraft (think it was Swiss) abort and go around just after an LH landing. I seem to recall the LH Aircraft wasnt the usual A320.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Have it confirmed the flight affected was LH4758. The captain reported smoke in the cockpit and declared a Mayday.

The pilot reported smoke in the cockpit when he declared the emergency. However he later changed his miond and said that there was no smoke, just a strange smell. Better to be safe than sorry though!

Seems just like even more of alarmist 'news reporting'!
