American Eagle May Return To Northwest Florida.

Sun Jul 18, 2004 6:04 am

I just read in the paper that America Eagle may return and resume service to Pensacola, Florida (PNS) in October.
In 1992, American Airlines began serving Pensacola with the demise of Eastern and a new market share. At that time they initially operated the S80's
with service to RDU (an AA hub at the time), shortly there after as the F100's began to come in, the company operated the newer airplanes into PNS.
A few months later the company swiched service to BNA.
Eventially, the airline scaled back to operating Saabs serving both
BNA and TPA. In October of 1996. American Eagle pulled out of Pensacola.
A blunder, for they never gave the best route (PNS-DFW) a chance.
Now Pensacola Airport management and city officials are working to lure the airline back the area, this time with direct service to DFW, with what the paper said operating the CRJ's...does American Eagle have any
Canadair Regionals? Ive only seen ERJ's operate but who knows, anyway..
another airline to PNS would be welcome news...any AMR employees that can expand on the news I read about?
Thanks,
JMH

American Eagle operates CR7s (a 70 seat version of a CRJ).

Do AA's CRJ70's have a FC section?

I believe the newspaper was in error and that the route would be operated by 50 seat ERJ's. AA's CRJ700's do not have FC.

It's interesting that the PNS airport is aggressively going after DFW service, since they already have DFW service on DL (5x daily). Obviously, AA offers more connecting opportunities at DFW than DL, but DL covers all the major connecting destinations (LAS,LAX,SAN,SEA,DEN,PHX). Personally, I think the PNS airport is trying to proactively fill service to DFW with AA, with the expectation that DL will dump the route when/if the DL DFW hub is shuttered.

Of course, I'd rather see AA service to ORD than DFW. The demand for ORD service is greater than DFW. But given the congestion at ORD, I doubt AA will be launching a ton of new cities from ORD anytime soon.

Hopefully, the airport is putting together some kind of incentives to lure Independence to offer IAD-PNS service.

It'd be great of IDE came to PNS. My parents live there, and it would be great if a decent connection could be made thru IAD. I'd have NO trouble doing that!

What about service to MIA? I am sure American Eagle could do well with at least two MIA-PNS flights a day on a regional jet.

I hope American Eagle considers TLH for service. Service to DFW and MIA I think could work quite well for them here.

Sounds Great...! CRJ service to DFW would be great, offers great connections to the midwest and the west coast of the U.S.
Would be great if they also added a daily AT7 service to MIA to offer service to SoFla and of course great connections to the Caribbean, Latin America from the AA hub along w/ the Cruises shipping out of MIA.
Nothing better than making love at 35K Feet!

I don't think South Florida service is likely to be a priority. The O+D demand between PNS and South Florida is pretty weak. Granted MIA offers a lot of connections, but most people from PNS are not headed to South America or the Caribbean. PNS has a miniscule Hispanic/Latino community and no major business ties to that part of the world either.

American Eagle has been looking at starting up (well, re-starting) more intra-Florida service from Miami in the future, with the re-start of Sarasota being talked about the most, as part of the MIA build-up. I would not rule out American Eagle starting MIA-PNS, but I don't see it as a priority (DFW or ORD would be better).

AA is coming to PNS. Service starts Oct 1 with 4x daily ER4 service to DFW.
Official press release should come tomorrow.

Should be interesting to see if DL puts up a fight on this route. AA has the superior hub at DFW, but minimal brand awareness or frequent flier base in PNS. DL has a weak hub at DFW, but a very loyal frequent flier base in PNS.

It may not matter in the long run if DL abandons the DFW hub. Then, AA will have the route to themselves and will probably very well.

AA should do VPS as well. Didn't AA fly DFW-BTR-VPS in the early 1990's
Also noticed that NW does PNS-MSP with CRJ
