Good Spots At IAD

Sun Feb 20, 2000 8:06 am

If my plan is approved, I will be off to IAD tomorrow morning aboard a brand new UA 777 from SFO, with return about 2 hrs. later aboard a 767-300.

I have a layover in IAD of approx. 2 hrs. before returning to SFO, and would really like to get some good pics at IAD (my first time back in about 7 years).

If anyone has good locations around the airport, either terminals or outside (MUST be within walking distance), I'd really appreciate it if you could post them here!

Thanks!

Unfortunately, IAD isn't the best airport for spotting, but it does have a few good spots. Visit http://www.planespotting.com/airports/pleast.html#IAD for a few suggestions from fellow spotters (including me). The best place is probably with outdoor observation deck. It is a bit complicated to find, but if you are interested in further directions, please email me privately (AirplaneGuy@mgfairfax.rr.com).

Thanks, Jacob!

I will be sure to try out the observation deck when I'm there tomorrow (hooray!)!

Thanks again!

Last year I worked at Dulles for about 8 months. I know the best places to go. The observation deck is okay. You'll see a Northwest DC-10 to your left, and an Air France A340-300 to your right, maybe Saudi Arabian's 747-400 further to your right. Also, Swissair's A330-200 will be in the distant. I suggest only going there for about 10 minutes. If I were you, I'd stay in the terminal you will be arriving in C/D. The best places to take photos of taxiing planes is from D, looking onto the new "B" terminal. There you will see the Swissair, Virgin 747, Delta planes, USAir planes, and all the United you'd want to see.

Have fun. I myself always enjoyed the non-rev daytrips!!

Thanks also to you, MEL! I probably will do just that!

DC-9-10--
I could arrive in IAD one flight earlier and depart one flight later (I'm on the second SFO in, and the second to last out), but the trip is mainly for the flights themselves aboard the two types of aircraft. The 777 going over will be my first time sitting in the new United First Suite while in flight, and the 767-300's comfort on the way back far outweighs the comfort found aboard the 757's and A320's also operating that route. I had planned to leave for IAD today (Saturday), and then return to SFO on Monday, but didn't really want to pay for a hotel!

I see they are using N782UA for UA212 (777) and N645UA for UA947 (763). This only gives you over an hour doesn't it? Oh well, if I got my WYOs back, I'd do trips just like that. I took N645UA from JFK-SFO red-eye in Aug. PTVs in every seat! They stuck me in coach, though. Hope the weather holds up. Do you know exactly which 777s have the sleeper seats?

Also, you should see Spanair's 767-300 (easily visible from observation deck attached to the main terminal near the mobile lounge dockings), Virgin has been operating a 747-400 lately, Lufthansa flies a 742, although you won't be able to get a good photo of it from the terminal, Air France will have a 777, not A340-300 (visible from observation deck), and Sabena will have an A330-200 or A330-300. Not sure where that guy parks.

have fun

I am really looking forward to getting some shots of the types that we don't get out here on the West Coast (ie: Spanair, Sabena, and AF 777's).

The way it works out, I have one hour and twenty-two minutes at IAD before I hop back on a plane for SFO! Day trips like this are the best, whether they be a short one hour flight to PHX, or a five our flight to IAD. For me, it's just the thrill of the plane ride and the excitement of the airport that truly "makes" my trip!

When I checked Apollo yesterday, and all day today, N782UA (SFO-IAD) will have the new beds, as shown by the seating configuration of 12F, 49B, 215Y. Not that the first two numbers (FC and BC) are significant, but the number of Economy Class seats gives it away--only the FC Bed aircraft have 215 in back (as opposed to between 217 and 231 for 3-class models). This so far is the only "external" way to tell which a/c have the beds, without going into the details of the nose numbers (which then are a dead giveaway).

Thanks again everyone for your help and comments!
