Mandatory Retirement Age For Pilots

Mon Jul 19, 2004 4:08 pm

In the USA the mandatory retirement age for pilots is 60 (duh!). Do other countries have similar ages or is it governed on your personal health only. Just curious........................

I think the age of retirement of an Airline Pilot should count on weather he/she can keep thier medicals up -to-date. I think many pilots would agree with me. I think the same thing should be in effect for ATC, which have to RETIRE at 56!

The age is mandatory only under union contracts. There's no law says you can't fly until a later age.

As for ATC, most of them don't survive for more than 10 years on the job before retiring to something else (either on doctor's advise or because they feel themselves they can no longer handle the stress).
I wish I were flying

Actually the age of 60 for retirement is mandatory by the FAA. And I have many friends that ATC at PHL, most of them with 20-30 years under thier belt. Alot of them say it's no where near as stressful as people make it be. I've watched them, and they are always very relaxed
