Why Is This Roadcrossing Infamous?

Tue Jul 20, 2004 7:34 am

Hi there,

I have always known about a roadcrossing in LHR and it has also been featured in a lots of photographs. But why does the photographer of this photo think that the roadcrossing is infamous. Am I missing out on some diasaster or other mishap that has happened once or reapeatedly on this roadcrossing?

Hmm, my best guess is that is a pain to shut down traffic, etc. Although, it is a nice photo op for photographers.  Smile

Why don't you ask the photographer, Michael Catchpole?

I thought it was because the road crossing separated the maintenance areas from the rest of LHR, so you get plenty of photo opportunities, at close proximity, when the road is closed for aircraft to be towed across. Or am I thinking of another road crossing?

I think he was merely referring to all the photographs in the a.net database taken at that location, and the fact that it's well known.

Cheers,

Because people like me would go there anytime I was at LHR to watch Concorde get towed across. The ability to be so close to the aircraft has something.
there is economy class, business class, first class...then Concorde..pure class

Because people want to see a multicar accident that involves a 777.

Seriously though, it's one of a few "non secure" places where you can see big jets up close.... that's my guess

He should have used the word "famous" instead.

I am the photographer - I meant infamous as in well-known/recognised - JeffDCA has it spot on. I wasn't referring to any incident!

You probably should change the caption - infamous means famous in a bad way.

Newsflash - BAA are to shortly close this road crossing for ever. Traffic will be diverted on the perimiter road behind the maintenance base - which is currently closed and being improved for the extra traffic it will take.

I don't think 'infamous' means famous in a bad way. Don't have a dictionary handy, sorry. But 'infamous' works for me, I guess I'm not a death-mad teenager looking for catastrophe at every turn to stay entertained?

Unfortunately the road through is soon to be closed, with traffic being diverted around the back of BA.

Infamous? Sure it is, try being stuck on a bus waiting to get through on your way to and from work!

Well if a plane crosses a street it is not something you see everyday... outside of LHR.

Does the original photograph show an aircraft landing on 23/05 or is it just parked on the side? Difficult to see.

MMEPHX,

That's one of the BA Concordes, and it's parked alongside the runway.

It's like the Three Amigos.....

Lucky (reading telegram): 'One hundred thousand pesos to come to Santa Poco, put on show, stop. The infamous El Guapo.'

Dusty: 'What does that mean? Infamous?'

Ned: 'Ah, Dusty! Infamous is when you're more than famous! This guy El Guapo is not just famous, he's IN-famous!'

Lucky: 'A hundred thousand pesos to do a personal appearance with this guy El Guapo, who is probably the biggest actor to ever come out of Mexico!'

Dusty: 'Wow, the IN-famous? IN-famous?'

haha, sorry, I couldn't help that one.  Big grin

Ah, the famous Road Crossing at LHR.

It's a shame that the crossing will be diverted, I love taking photos from that spot - even with so many pictures from that spot, they still generate lots of hits!

I think I will have to get up to LHR soon, to get some more from that place and upload them from time to time to keep my average view count up  Big grin

If you haven't experienced that spot, its worth giving it a go before the road gets diverted. A triple seven undercarriage covers the whole road!

Regards,
Simon Nicholls
