SQ Long Haul Service In Economy

Tue Jul 20, 2004 7:21 pm

As we all know, it takes 24 hours to get from OZ to Europe. Having travelled both via the states and via Asia, I have to say that of the 10 airlines I have travelled the route with, Singapore Airlines will always get my business. I was reluctant to fly with them because of their reputation for being snobby and arrogant. And while their were perhaps glimpses of this, I feel they have every right to be.
On previous trips with other airlines, you fall asleep and wake up thinking 'how am I going to spend the next few hours before we land'.
Singapore Airlines made the 24 hours fly by (literally). 100 CDs to chose from,
30 TV programs, Nintendo, 20 movies, PTV's, and they give you ice cream before bedtime  Smile All this in Economy!
Is there really any other choice for Long Haul?

Your thoughts?

I use them when I can from USA to Asia. Flown UA/NW/BA/LH/JL/CX, they offer the best quality consistently.

SQ or CX is the way to go.
But for Y, I heard that CX does not offer Audio/Video on Demand.
SQ does for most of their long haul flights.
Seat pitch, comfort and food is about the same.
On CX you get slightly better amenity pouch.

If you ask me, I would go with SQ.

You should try Malasian Air. Probably the most under-rated airline in S.E. Asia and the world.

SQ will always be high on my list. Went on them once LHR-SIN-PER and vise versa a couple of years ago, and have never had such a great flight (despite my friend getting rather air sick right next to me!!). Very friendly crew, and great service!

You should try Malasian Air. Probably the most under-rated airline in S.E. Asia and the world.

I guess you haven't heard they nearly once had their licence to operate in the UK pulled by the CAA due to them loading on the minimum amount of fuel so they could get a straight in approach at LHR. They once didn't even have enough fuel to taxi from the runway to the terminal, and had to be towed in. This happened more than once as well. Think i'll pass on Malaysia Airlines!

Cheers,

Jeff

A friend who worked for BA at LHR when this was going on, not sure if there's any info about it on the web or not.

Cheers,

If you're travelling thru LAX, try Singapore's A345. "Economy" is all Premium Economy. I'm dying to try it out!
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

Yes SQ is fabulous I must say...its head and tails above the other airlines flying the kangaroo route with the exception of MH who I have never flown with.

Kris world is excellant and the service is top notch. My only complaint is that the catering can be a bit woeful.

JeffDCA,

I would like to mention that the incident you mentioned happened 5 years ago (1999) . Since then the have undoubtedly rid themselves of that bad practice.

Here is the link to the article http://www.malaysia.net/dap/sg1769.htm

Malaysia Airlines is now one of the top ten airlines in the world, judged by Skytrax and so on..

But i believe that SQ and MH are two airlines that provide you with extremely good service in Economy class. Although SQ IFE outclasses MH right now, Come November when the first B777 rolls out with the new IFE and Business and First (B777's will be two class only, B747 will be 3 Class) Then SQ and MH will be on a level playing ground.

Just read the article and I mus say, was never aware of this incident. It sounds dodgey as!! Shame on MH. What a gross act of negligence with so many lives at risk. Mind you, SQ has done some dodgey things as well re: the tail scrape incident at Auckland with inexperienced crew and the crash in Taipei from pilot error in taking off on the wrong runway.

I'm a medical practitioner and in medical practice, the amount of caution to prevent harm to EACH patient taken these days is rather extra-ordinary. When you fly hundreds of lives across the world, there is just no justification for practices like that. (re: the MH incident), none whatsoever. I hope they sacked those responsible.

as for long haul economy: I think SQ are still one of the best. CX also consistently. I love BA and QF-both have improved by leaps and bounds and are comparable. The truth is that these airlines have all raised the bar against each other because the Kangaroo route is the most competitive long haul route in the world with the world's best carriers competing against each other. Whatever you do, don't fly any of the US carriers unless you don't care about inflight service at all.

SQ and CX's seat pitch is what can drive me crazy on such a long flight. 31" compared to MH and TG's 34" in economy.

Bah!!! CO and DL are wonderful!!! I would even try United!! Qantas makes it sound like flying with a U.S. carrier is one step from doom. Nothing can be further from the truth. If you want to be squished - then perhaps try LH, but for my money, I would fly with a U.S. carrier any day. In my view, and perhaps my view alone, Qantas is perhaps the most OVERRATED carrier (followed quickly by SQ)

I just got back from a four-day holiday in HKG... travelled via CX A343 in Y both ways (did J-class a few months back - and that was amazing).

In Y, one way we had the newer IFE system - not AVOD, but with a big selection and menu pages similar to the AVOD system they use in J. On the return journey, we had smaller screens, with much worse picture quality, and no menu pages, but we did have an extra 4 channels (total: 30). On top of that there were about 20 music channels. One of the best things you can do with their system is set the radio to play during the airshow - I really wish BA would do that... Actually, I really with BA would do a major upgrade on their IFE... If not in Y, at least in J.

On a whole, CX service was impeccable... Now I've never done SQ (will try it out soon enough I hope), but CX really do put North American airlines to shame. I really noticed this as I continued my journey with a local airline here in Canada, and there's no comparison.

Best,

Thank you Agmyvr...

It makes sense now. I didn't realise only 5 A340s remained in the three class config - thought they'd keep more with F.
