A380 And The 7E7 Can Co-exist

Wed Jul 21, 2004 6:58 am

I am not sure why both major airplane makers are having a verbal battle. These 2 new respective planes can co-exist and be successful.
An airline can use the A380 for the routes where they multiple flights per day and consolidate those flights into 1-2 A380s. That same airline could use the 7E7 for routes that need service but does not have the traffic for a 777 or a 747. I see advantages for both aircraft in a fleet for many airlines. Sure I would like to Boeing have the largest and best aircraft however w/o Airbus, innovation and competition would have been stagnant. Competition is necessary.

I agree entirely, as they serve different markets. For example the A380 could be used to reduce the number of daily flights on routes such as LHR-DXB/SIN/JFK* etc while the 7E7 could help BA (for example) restart 'long-thin' routes such as LHR-SAN etc.
The take off slots at congested airports freed-up by the A380 would then be used by the 7E7 on routes not previously viable. A win-win situation.

*Yes I know that VS are the only airline currently operating the LHR-JFK route that are interested in the A380.

Of course, you might have noticed they are completely different aircraft for different markets, despite what all the popular media try to make us believe ..

I dont think Airbus is worried with the A380... However, Airbus is very worried about their popular and the very profitable A330... so they are being protective of their current products and not so much the future of the A380 as its in a league of its own... Again, with or without the Airbus hype - 200 7E7s have been accounted by the airlines for the later of this decade.
Airbus or Boeing - it's all good to me!

A380 is designed to topple the 747 monopoly and I assume the 7E7 is for extreme range and rival A330. Different planes, different markets, what is the problem? So what if there may be more orders for 7E7 than A380 over the next few years, what is the point of bragging without a reference point?
