SAA Joining Star And QF Codeshare

Wed Jul 21, 2004 9:45 am

This had probably be answered elsewhere but when does SAA officially join Star???

Will the codeshare arrangement in place with QF SYD JNB SYD still be in place?

I think the codeshare will remain in place as QF maintains many codeshare relationships with other alliances including Skyteam and Star Alliance as well as One World.

QF codehsres with VN to SGN. OZ to ICN. AF to PAR. BR to TPE.FJ to NAN and SUV.CX to FCO.LX to ZRH. AY to HEL. LA to SCL in addition to numerous codeshares with BA and AA. Forgive me if I have missed out a few others

I posted a similar question yesterday, but nobody answered so far.

I found the following article in the business day za under the headline:
"Vetting of SAA could last 18 months"

its on this side: http://www.bday.co.za/bday/content/direct/1,3523,1660208-6078-0,00.html

And I asked the question how this could so long, because it never lasted more than a year between an announcement of a new member and its entrance into star.

Regarding their codeshares I remember that I somewhere read the last days that they can maintain some of their codeshares from out of star. For example I don't see anyone who could have a problem with a domestic codeshare between SA and QF. But I guess that NZ wouldn't be so happy if they also codeshare over the Tasman. Not sure if their relationship with CX can maintain. But I am quite sure that they will terminate their codeshare with DL and switch to UA because they already announced this.

The answer to that question has changed twice since the official announcement of SAA joining Star, which is probably why there is so much confusion about it...

At (or around the time of) the announcement, SAA said that keeping it's QF and CX codeshares was one of it's own conditions for joining Star, and that this condition had been accepted.

A few weeks ago, the Star Alliance CEO said that SAA would have to give up the links to QF and CX...

And a few days ago, there was an article in a South African newspaper (I think it was in the Business Day) saying that the links could, and would, remain.

At this point I'd say that it does seem as if they'll be keeping those agreements... but I guess that time will tell...

Indeed, there's quite some confusion going on. Even the FF's have to scrounge around for info.

SAA currently has "observer status" of Star, as there are certain requirements and criteria they still have to fulfill.

In June, Jaan Albrecht (CEO: Star) made a statement in Singapore. He said that SAA would have to relinquish it's codeshares with QF & CX. However, it seems a bit unusual, as OZ is codesharing with QF on the ICN-SYD-ICN route!?

On July 16, 2004; an article appeared in Business Day and stated that SAA don't have to ditch the QF & CX codeshares.

SAA and QF does not have any domestic codeshares, either in South Africa or Downunder. They only codeshare on the JNB-PER and JNB-SYD routes. I truly don't know why.
