NW Expanding At MKE More?

Wed Jul 21, 2004 2:47 pm

Does anyone think that NW could do anymore expanding at MKE? Nobody really thought that they were going to do anything at IND and then they go on and make it a focus city. So what routes can you see NW adding to MKE in the future, in addition to LAX, LAS, PHX, BOS, LGA, BWI, STL, MCI, and MCO. Anyone think a MKE-AMS for people connecting to Europe from any of these smaller cities?

Frankly, the RJ flights to MCI and STL surprised me greatly, so nothing would shock me as far as what they might have in store for MKE. While I'd love to see a MKE-AMS routing, perhaps only 3x or 4x weekly, I doubt it'll ever happen while ORD maintains its omnipresence as the region's premiere international airport.

More likely, with SEA already being a focus city of sorts and PDX continuing to get added NW service, at least a nonstop to the Pacific Northwest (likelier MKE-SEA) doesn't seem out of the question. MKE-SFO also seems like a possibility as well.

Agreed with Mikey on pretty much every count - MKE-SFO, MKE-PDX and MKE-SEA, especially the latter route, seem to be the most likely. I believe SEA is the largest U.S. metropolitan area without nonstop Milwaukee service. However, because of that distinction, NW can (and does) enjoy a large share of the market between the cities without offering nonstop service.

SFO service is likely only because YX recently began nonstop service, unlike their other common destinations, there might not be a large enough market to support mainline service between the cities.

As far as "dark horse" candidates for new NW service, I'd have to nominate IND (a daily RJ or two could siphon market share from YX), RSW (a new market which has some seasonal demand) and IAD, if only to discourage Independence from beginning the route.

Unlikely? Maybe... but last night, an IND focus city was also unlikely.

I put in my vote for MKE to SFO!

...then RJ or Saab service from MKE to MSN and I will be a happy man!

Despite COEx taking two gates, does NW still have that entire end of Concourse E for expansion? How many gates is that now...6? Does DL have plans to move in to E? And on that note, are NW's partners considering adding service to capitalize on their relationship with NW and their accompanying loyal customers in MKE?

By observation, some other nonstop destinations that are not served include MIA, SAT, and MSY, although I don't really see NW starting any of those.

So how many flights total will NW have out of MKE? IND is going to have i believe 39 total flights.

4everRC - I don't see the MKE-MSN service going into action because of several reasons. One being that NW is already the largest carrier out of MSN. Another is that YX is one of the smallest carriers in MSN. NW has a 45 minute flight to MSP and 1:05 flight to DTW to connect to many more destinations than what MKE has to offer for NW pax. The flight to MKE + taxi times, your going to be from MSN to Brookfield by the time the plane gets to the gate, by driving. Most pax that fly Midwest drive over to MKE anyways that are from the MSN area. Its a lost cause to try to drive YX out of the MSN market, because they've already pretty much done that in MSN anyways. They used to bring in 2 MD80/DC9s a day and 4 B1900s or FRJs. Now its down to FRJs and B1900s with about 6 or 7 flights a day.

NW twisting the knife deeper into YX's back at MSN won't do them any good, since there is barely any O&D MKE-MSN pax. Its nearly 3 hours (check-in, security, taxi, flight, taxi, etc) from MSN-MKE by plane, while by car its a touch over an hour.

My guess is we will see an additional MKE-STL flight. One flight a day, mid day just wont cut it when AA is going with 4 daily.

I betting MKE- IND twice daily also.

Mikey: NW has E gates 64 through 69. I would not be surprised if DL and AirTran did a gate swap of E-60 and 61 to DL with C-25 and 27 to AirTran to make the alliance complete on the E concourse...especially because the C concourse has become the "leisure/discount/charter" concourse with ATA, Frontier, HP, USA3000, etc. Only thing is, I don't know if C-25 has a jetway...that is the Comair gate and for quite a while it was stairs only, might still be that way.

the C concourse has become the "leisure/discount/charter" concourse

...which has always made me believe that B6 has some big plans over there once C's expansion is completed. (sorry, slightly off topic)

I'm all for new airlines...I just want to know where the crap they expect a new airline to put a check in counter...there's plenty of space for more gates and planes, there is damn near NO space for more airlines downstairs short of some major expansion (or stealing from YX.)

YX has too much real-estate downstairs. Especially when you look at morning and afternoon block times on peak-days, NW has less space, enplanes more passengers, and has done a vastly better job of routing customers through kiosks, and promoting other vehicles of remote, and electronic check-in.

YX has, like 3 kiosks at the entrance from the level-3 footbridge from the parking garage, no real signage promoting it, nor any assistance if you needed it. Their other bank of kiosks are next to the monitor-bank by the elevator station between the NW/UA/AA hall and the remainder of the check-in area. Move them into the check-in lines, and promote their use!

UnitedXpress/AWAC could probably slim down one counter position as well, or they could take the Funjet counter at the end of the hall next to HP and give it to a new airline. As it is, USA3k is upstairs, at the entrance to C...

I doubt MKE-AMS would happen. With 4 daily non stops from DTW-AMS, 3 daily non-stops from MSP-AMS, and 1 daily from MEM to AMS, I doub't that they would put a non-stop flight from MKE-AMS. There are plenty of connecting opportunities for NW pax out of MKE to Europe.

I would think that SEA-MKE would be the next likley candidate for MKE as far as mainline service goes. Who knows what medium sized markets NW might expand to using the CRJ's. There are still 40 new CRJ's on their way to the airlink partners, so we will see what happens. I suspect there will be quite a few point to point routes added out of the heartland, using CRJ's.
The New American is arriving.

The MKE-AMS discussion has already been discussed, and, MKE's real lack of any extensive customs facility predicates that the route could not be flown until there is an improvement and expansion to the existing IAB.

I would throw a bet down that SFO is the next n/s destination. With the n/s currently from YX having rather inconvenient times, and the better-timed YX flight connecting through MCI, a n/s from NW with more convenient timing would likely be successful.

The YX loads on the MKE-MCI-SFO flights have been impressive, with most of the o/d traffic coming from MKE.

Mlsrar: agreed, except does GMIA have the balls to take space away from the flagship airline? I don't even know what the rights are as between YX and GMIA as to how much space they get down there...I would imagine the county has some sort of contingency plan for where they would put a new "major" airline (probably since they were trying to get WN for so long, now looks like they are hunting down B6 more forcefully.) I mean, you can get by with one or two counter positions for a 3-flight-a-day operation like HP, I don't know that WN or B6 would be amenable to the same situation. They've already shrunk counter space further down the line, US practically has a closet...though they're cutting, not expanding, so I suppose that works.

But...I will agree that NW is making good use of its space, and I like the kiosks. YX is still getting there with its kiosks (only this week can you print a receipt on them, still can't switch to an exit row seat.)
