Lufthansa Cancels MUC To BOS Direct Service?

Thu Jul 22, 2004 12:57 am

Everywhere I've read, it seems as LH is expanding its US flights. In this thread it mentions 2 flights from BOS to MUC daily:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1642251/4/

I made a reservation and bought tickets on LH424 and LH425 for Nov 4, and nov 13 about a month ago. Yesterday, I get a call from LH saying that my flight is no longer available due to an 'equipment change'. They put me on flight connecting in AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, I have to leave a few hours earlier and get there a few hours later. It would not be that bad, but I'm travelling with an infant and an extra few hours makes a big difference. How is cancelling a flight called an equipment change? My final destination is in Austria anyway, and I'm only flying into MUC because that is(or was) the closest direct flight from BOS to where I'm going. And I'd much rather drive an extra 2 hours on the autobahn than hang out in the terminal. If I am forced to buy a connecting flight, VIE is better.

Anyway, the reason why I'm posting I'm wondering if there is any information about this cancellation. Everything I read is that LH is expanding. It seems the last day for LH424 is in october, I checked many dates on LH's web pagem, and no direct flights after october. The people at the call center seem clueless. I'm wondering if its possible that they are just changing the flight numbers and whatnot, deleted the old flights, and just haven't put the new info in the 'system' yet.

This is really a great site. Thanks for any help.

This flight has been a seasonal flight since it started, running only in the summer. During the winter, LH cuts back significantly at BOS, running only one 744 in daily, as compared to 2 343s to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and a 343 to MUC.

Well, I don't know anything about the flight, but you might be able to call LH and explain your story... Because they are the ones that have incovenienced you, you might be able to get a connecting flight to VIE from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA without too many penalties or additional costs. I realize that the chances of that happening are slim but it's worth a shot. I had a similar experience with UA and they were more than willing to accomodate me. Hope it helps.

What you will find is that some international routes--especially the 'long-and-thin' ones like MUC-BOS--hybernate for the winter until somewhere around Memorial Day when they resume. I believe that initially the flight you describe was such a seasonal flight, but I also thought that it was doing well enough to go year-round. Evidently it isn't. And LH can't really determine these things until they see how advance bookings look for your timeframe (November), and now is about when they have some visibility into the fall season. I realize that it's upsetting to learn news like this, but it's a rite of passage for international flights: after Labor Day or thereabouts, many of these flights go away until spring of the following year.

As a travel agent, if there is a routing change and it does not meet the passengers needs, it is fully refundable (whether it is a non-refundable ticket or not). Therefore, you can use that money towards a new Vienna-Frankfurt-BOS routing if you want. Chances are the price is not the same so you can only use that money towards the new ticket plus any fare difference. Basically, you are starting over.

I don't think this is just a seasonal downscaling of the Munich Hub anymore. Over the past week or so Lufthansa has canceled the planned Munich-Johannesburg flight in favor of a non-stop Frankfurt-Cape Town frequency, as well as reduced the frequency of the Los Angeles and San Francisco runs to 3 weekly each. Now the Munich-Boston is gone. Furthermore, the Munich-Miami seasonal flight will not return as a daily connection, but will run thrice weekly only.

Obviously, more is going on than just seasonal adjustments. The Johannesburg flight is supposed to be a winter only seasonal operation and it's not running. The San Francisco has been going year round for a while now, yet is reduced to thrice weekly for the upcoming winter. Planned flights to Los Angeles and Boston are reduced in frequency or not operated. Is Lufthansa rethinking its Munich strategy?

Quote HB-IWC:"Is Lufthansa rethinking its Munich strategy?"

I don't believe this.

In former years there were been also reduced frequencies to SFO and cancelings like BOS and LAX for winter season. Last year there was been also a reduction in MUC-JFK flights.

The canceling MUC-JNB is a typical LH policy, because the new STAR-member SAA upgrades its AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-CPT flights and LH will do something against. In former times they have flown AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-JNB-CPT and now it is necessary to do also a nonstop flight. This needs a additional aircraft and the possibility to go from MUC over JNB to CPT is not available.

In this case it make sense to cancel the MUC-JNB flight.

The MUC-MIA flight before 9-11 was served by NG (LaudaAir) and it was also only 3 times a week.

Not true. When Lauada flew MIA-MUC, it was 5x a week. Also, Lufthansa served MIA-MUC last winter timetable, and it was a daily service. They also served MIA-MUC for part of the summer timetable at 3x a week. I have heard that the schedule is not 100% finalized, and MIA-MUC may go daily, but a lot may depend on if they are going to still be using the Thomas Cook 763 next winter. The demand is there to fill a daily 343, but flying it only 3x a week does wonders for yield.

Indeed.

Sadly it looks like BOS-MUC, YUL-MUC will take the seasonal cuts.

Boston shows back on the first week of April -> daily 343
Montreal shows back on the first week of Apri -> 3 weekly 343 (going daily in the summer)

SFO/LAX reduced to 3 weekly, same with MIA.

This, to me, is a clear sign of MUC hub emphasis reduction.
