Ryanair - New Hub At LTN, 4x 738's & 9 New Route!

Thu Jul 22, 2004 7:01 pm

Ryanair has today announced they are to launch nine new routes from Luton and to base four 737-800's at the airport in addition to the 737-200 based at there flying to Dublin and the 737-800 flying to Milan Bergamo.

The new destinations are:
BARCELONA (GIRONA) - 2x Daily
ESBJERG - 1x Daily
ROME - 2x Daily
BARCELONA (REUS) - 1x Daily
MURCIA - 1x Daily
STOCKHOLM (VASTERAS) - 2x Daily
DINARD - 1x Daily
NIMES - 1x Daily
VENICE - 2x Daily

I am wondering if Ryanair's announcement is in response to the latest row they are having with BAA about the charges at Stansted.

There have been rumours for years Ryanair would annouce a major base at Luton and that day has finally come!

This comes in addition to other services that have been announced at Luton in recent the recent days and weeks:

easyJet
2x Daily Service - Dortmund
2x Daily Service - Warsaw
1x Daily Service - Krakow
Increase to 2x Daily Service - Budapest
In addition three new aircraft to be based at airport taking the number to eighteen, and the routes for these aircraft to be announced in the coming weeks!

Wizz Air
2x Daily Service - Warsaw
1x Daily Service - Gdansk
Increase to 2x Daily Service - Katowice (Krakow)
Increase to 3x Daily Service - Budapest

Britannia (TUI)
1x Weekly Service - Sharm El Sheikh

Thomas Cook Airlines
Annouced a second aircraft will be based at LTN during July, August and September. With two 757's being based at the airport throughout the Summer Season 05.

The last few weeks must have seen the largest growth in the airports history!

Perfect, Nimes is not far for me and we already had Nimes - London Stansted. More choice is always better!

Expect a similar reduction in STN routes due to landing charges doubling for FR there. DNR was always a marginal route for FR
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Man, Luton needs a full parallel taxiway ASAP now. I wonder how much time is wasted with the backtracking at either end as it is now.

I have just read on the BBC News website that any future expansion from the London region is also likely to be at Luton too. Not because of his latest argument with BAA but because he admits STN is beginning to get congested!

Separately, Ryanair announced it planned to invest £130m in its services at Luton airport. It said it would be introducing nine new European routes from the airport.

"Any growth in the London area for the next year or two will probably be ex-Luton. Stansted is essentially full at this stage," chief executive Michael O'Leary told Reuters.

Quite a bit even now and LTN is very quiet ,as you probably know, for large portions of the day.

I am hearing that BAA are sueing Ryanair for £1 Million for non payment of fees at Stansted and that BAA are cancelling Ryanairs discount currently offered which could see per pax costs increase by 100%...

I'm still wondering when some of these LCC's will focus a bit more on LGW. We are a bit starved of routes and LCC competition this side of the river.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I think BGY-LGW, CIA-LGW, HHN-LGW and GRO-LGW are bound to happen eventually, FR have plenty of planes on order and they have to fly somewhere, BAA might prefer other customers though.

LGW slots are not that easy to come by, especially for multiple daily roundtrips which an LCC needs to offer. Don't think FR is going to open up at LGW any time soon, after the slagging MOL gave BAA over Stansted.

They would not have a base at LGW, the aircraft would fly in from their bases at BGY, CIA, HHN, and GRO.

Babybus, easyJet are opening many new routes from LGW - so much so, that it's becoming one of easyJet's 'superhubs'. You've also got BA offering some very competitive fares ex-Gatwick so you don't have it so bad!  Big thumbs up

Great news re Ryanair at LTN but one wonders where the space is coming from given ezy are also expanding, and the popularity of LTN with the bizjet crowd.
