Thu Jul 22, 2004 9:51 pm

Looks like they will defer the deliveries instead of selling the planes!!

Yes, but with a deferred delivery, the topics on here about what Delta is going to do with its fleet are just going to be more confusing and complicated. I guess with more 777s coming in 07-09, we should not expect a 7E7 order soon?  Wink/being sarcastic

Until they get the financial house in order I would not expect any plane orders anytime soon.

Luv2fly is right. DL is in no position to order new aircraft...their survival right now outweighs the need for new aircraft...though I must say it is incredibly awesome that they will keep their remaining 777s on order Big thumbs up  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

If there is one thing that I have to complain for about DL, it is the size of their 777 fleet. It needs to get bigger Big thumbs up But in order for it to get bigger, DL has to survive this nightmare of cash shortage.

I believe the 5 remaining MD11's will fill the gap between now and when delivery takes place of the additional 777's.

A mix of them are at YMX and GYR. Talk is that we may activate these soon.

Is that DL will keep with 777 aircraft in the long time and how much longer will decide to keep them?

Take a look at the current payscale for 777 captains vs. the pay for the same equipment at AA, CO and UA - THIS is why DL is deferring the 777 deliveries:

http://www.airlinepilotpay.com/dal/dal.htm
http://www.airlinepilotpay.com/aa/aa.htm
http://www.airlinepilotpay.com/ual/ual.htm
http://www.airlinepilotpay.com/cal/cal.htm

The average top of scale pay for 777 captains at AA, CO and UA is $200/block hour. At DL it's $320/block hour.

Sorry, folks. I thought I made it clear that I was not expecting a DL order anytime soon with the " Wink/being sarcastic".

What is the block rate for pilots on the MD-11?

I believe it tops out at $305 for captains and $208 for first officers.

With a recent quarterly loss of $2B, I'm wondering if DL's days are numbered; not mentioning how they intend to pay for their 777 deliveries.

Does anyone working for DL on here know if the MD-11s are truly coming back? That'd be sweet, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Is Delta responsible for the order of Regional Jets? Or is that DCI's responsiblity? Question being with these deferrals, does that mean all aircraft in the DL system or just mainline?

I think they are realizing too that Asia is the market to be in right now, they have a very weak presence there unless they code-share with CO, NW, or KE. The additional 777's will help that tremendously, plus they are soon (next 7-8 years) going to need to start thinking about what to do with the 757's and 767's plus the MD-80's/90's. I think they are also trying to do their best to simplify their fleet as much as possible, they currently have a fairly good mix of different types. Including regional carriers and Song they have the following CRJ, CR7, ATR's, ERJ's, 732, 733, 738, 752, 762, 763, 764, 772, MD-80, MD-90. I'm sure that they could take a couple of those out to help simplify.

I thought the md90's were suppossed to be phased out in a couple years, theres only 16 of them so its a pretty small fleet. It might have changed by now but it was in one of there investor reports a while ago.

This is not the best news for Boeing. 113 options cancelled, many orders deffered.

The 737-800 delivery positions were sold to Lombard Aviation. They are a leasing company

If they needed additional pacific capicity wouldn't it make more sense to turn a few of the 767-400ER into intl config for Atlantic runs to replace the 777? Seems a lot cheaper than putting the MD11's back into service.

Nlink...prob. would be cheaper to conver 764's...but they dont have 764s to spare...the whole point being that the MD11 is the cheapest way for DL to add capacity to the system...

Now that we are digressing into Asia service expansion, what are the advantages of DL doing it with their own metal at this point? It might be a good idea to get their foot in the door but it might be a bit spendy, given their current situation. Would the revenues generated outweight the expenses of expanding their currently miniscule Asia ops? Or does it make more sense to rely on codeshares for the time being?

Great news! At least deffering deliveries is a lot better than cancellations and or selling the slots to other companies. Looking forward to see the remaining DL 777s eventually.

Whatever. This massive option cancellation is serious blow for Boeing. Again.
And deferring all orders to after 2007 also. In fact that means that Delta - good luck to them - much likely won´t order anything in the next 3 or 4 years big scale.
With AA and UA in deep shit too, Continental having a new fleet and NWA having placed orders and deliveries for a good part of what they might need in the next years already (at least referring for the international fleet) there isn´t much to expect from US airlines to help Boeing besides more 737s that are always in demand.
