DFW Spotting

Mon Feb 21, 2000 6:07 am

I am considering a spotting trip to DFW within the next week. Are there good photo/spotting locations from the terminals or within walking distance? What types of aircraft are there during the early-mid afternoon period? Thanks!

Hey there Flyf15:

To be honest, DFW to me is one of the tougher places to spot a wide range of aircraft. If you hang out in one of the terminals, you miss a lot of action. If you ride around in one of the trams, you might get lucky and see something interesting, but you need to be quick on the camera trigger.

DFW has an observation area located on the southeast corner of the airfield, but you need wheels to get there. It's located near the administration building on a small rise. But, there you're at the whim of which ever direction the traffic is going.

If I had some time there, I might try the 2W terminal on the west side, since it has the international carriers, and the oddballs (everything other than AA and DL).

Good luck, let us know how you make out.

2W is good but you have to thak pictures though bad glass they have black stripes in them.

Note for Tom in No Aeromexico goes into E
and Canadian goes in to A.

2W is now B by the way.

Hey Chris,

coming by DFW eh? Afternoon 1:30 - 4:00 is when all the major international arrivals take place. You will not find terminal 2W at DFW anymore cause its now called B. Gates 20 + would be the best places to spot from here. The ugly black window over hangs are not found here like else where in the terminal plus this is where BA, Lufthansa, and JAL park. Terminal A gates 1-4 is also pretty nice (its the American Eagle area - you'll get to see planes taxi by the bridge near there - pretty neat). There are some other neat spots, but you would need wheels like someone already mentioned. If you had come here over the weekend, I might have been able to show you around , I still might depending on work. Email me if you need more details.
Hope this helped a bit.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

Any good spots to recommend if I got wheels available? I've been to the observation area on the SE side of the airport, and it is OK for the mornings. Still trying to find a good spot to see (and photograph) the action on the western runways.

By the way, if I remember correctly, Delta operates a satalite terminal off 4E (linked with an underground tunnel), which places it much closer to the taxiways and runways. Does anyone know if the windows at that terminal is any good for photographic purposes?

Thanks.

DFW is not exactly the best airport for spotting but some of the key spots are the admirals club in the terminal that serves literally all of the airlines and by the gates in the terminal that serve BA lufthansa, JAL and korean air, the best time is early afternoon(thats when the international traffic comes in)

Try following airfield drive (it takes you around the airport), and you will find some nice spots on both the south and north end of the runways.

If my memory serves me correct, most of the windows at DFW are tinted. I was there last September and I was not happy because most of the windows were tinted brown, including Delta's little island.

If they weren't tinted brown then there was a shade down that also inhibited photography.

The only place I was satisified with was some near the American Airline's portion of the old 2W terminal.

Photography inside the terminals was generally horrible....Is my memory correct?

Dfw-man:

I have a copy of that same picture on the bulletin board behind my computer in my office at work. They need to update it however (reference the not-yet completed north-south runway that was opened at least two years ago).

There's an access road around the northwest part of the field that is OK for pictures.
