Lockheed 1011...

The L1011 aircraft built in the 70s, was one of the most advanced aircraft of its time! It was highly demanded from airlines who wanted a long range plane that did not necessarily have the seating capacity of a 747! However, they could seat 240-300 passengers depending on the seating configuration.

It competed directly with the Dc 10 aircraft, but as some may be aware there was distinct differences between them!

One such difference, I was told was the abundant safety measures that were inherit on the L10, but not initially on the dc 10!

The long range version of the L1011 was introduced, the 500 series, and this one was chosen and used by Pam Am, Delta Airlines and BWIA Int'l to name a few!

To this date, BWIA and Delta still have them in operation, although they both have reaslied that the time has come to get newer and more efficient planes that would hopefully live up to the reputation and image left by the L1011!

The L1011 TriStar was indeed a fine aircraft in its day (unfortunately - all good things must come to an end and its about time that replacements were sought to give the L1011 a good send-off).

I used to fly quite frequently on British Airways' TriStar service to Malaysia in the 1980s. It sure was a haul alright - the 747 (100/200 series in those days) did the London-Kuala Lumpur sector with one refuelling stop en-route (something Malaysia Airlines was proud to advertise against BA) but the TriStar matched that when we only refuelled at Abu Dhabi.

But as you said, the TriStar provided excellent service when demand was thin - so the majority of flights I took refuelled twice calling in at a Middle-East station before stopping at Bangkok or India to pick/drop passengers, before arriving in Kuala Lumpur almost 19 hours later...just imagine that...the 747-400 today does it in one single hop in just over 13 hours.

The L-1011 is my favorite jetliner for a whole collection of reasons, many of which you stated. The advanced technology, safety, (cute looks), and quiter performance (hence the name 'Whisper Jet') are things I love about them. I never miss a chance to see one at ORD.

I agree that the L-1011 was very well designed, Lockheed did their homework when they built this plane.
They did not cut corners like MD did with the DC-10, that caused some accidents to occur. It is too bad that Lockheed did not offer engines from P&W and GE for customers, they would have sold more aircraft and kept the plane in production for many more years.

Well, its said that if the DC-10 had not won the Tanker contract from the Air Force the L-1011 would still be around today. Unfortunatly the government thought Lockheed had its hands full with the C-5 and C-130 among other projects so they thru MD a bone with the KC-10.
